Speaking of older rods, I bought this one from Dave Male (oneculm). It's a very nice one-tip 1 1/2F Heddon 14. It casts great with a TT5.

Last week, I took delivery of a Kagerow Kei 7'6" 3/2 4wt from Rick at Westslope. It's a tiger-flamed penta. I plan to give it a try out next
week on some Lost Creek rainbows.. I hope to have some pictures to post upon my return, it sure is a pretty thing.

I aquired this Quad about a year and a half ago. I sat on it a while and then sent it off to Mr. Nunley for a restore job. I have had it back several months. I cannot say enough about the power of an Edwards Quad. Nor can I deny the skill of Mr. Nunley. Both Men are absolute masters. It is an 8 foot 3/2 #34. You can see by the dirty cork that I have enjoyed many trips to the South Holston River with this rod. Quite a few Browns and Rainbows have fallen prey to this magnificent tool. Thanks again R. L. Aaron, great rod, but as you might tell from the postings on the sickness inflicted by quadraphenia started by Dennis and commented on by others, W.E. Edwards,
in my humble opinion, should be given a great deal more credit for his getting the quad sickness going in full force and for his beautiful rods which are
closely emulated by the later Carlsons, Grays, Spittlers, and Zietacks. Ric

Nice quad. I have a 2/2 W.E. Edwards #40 that I haven't fished in a couple of years, and this inspires me to bring it back out.

Received a new J. C. Zimny 98Q 7' 2/2 4wt. 2.5oz. today. To say the least I'm very impressed with his cosmetics and taper(med-fast+). A picture of it
can be seen in my post about "Quad Sickness" .

seattlesetters wrote:Just wanted to give you all a report. I was finally able to fish (kind of....the hand is still all broken up) the rod this past weekend. She is everything I had hoped for, and she really suits me. I love the way she feels and casts, and I was about as accurate with her as I have been with any rod.
I used a Phoenix DT-4 and with that line was able to make truly accurate casts anywhere from 5' of line out to 50' of line out. It was effective to
60' or so, but the sweet spot for me was at 25 - 30'...she just felt perfect at that distance. I could generate plenty of line speed for tight
places, make a nice, open loop when the fish were feeding on small mayflies out in the open and even used her with a Western-style hopper/dropper rig
(although the "hopper" was a smallish, #12 Royal PMX) for a brief period of "prospecting" when nothing was happening. She handled all
beautifully!
I caught a few 8 - 12" fish on her and it was fun! I did have a take by a larger trout (16" +) but he came unbuttoned after just a couple of head
shakes. It would have been nice to have landed him with the rod, but it just wasn't to be. Maybe next time....
Anyway, I wanted to thank Chris McDowell for his work. The rod is drop-dead gorgeous and fishes like a dream. It will always occupy an honored place in my
quiver.

Congrats Marty! It's drop dead beautiful! It's supposed to rain this weekend. Any chance of bringing it to YOUR riffle for some of us to try out?

When we arrived in Mountain Home today Bob Nunley presented me with a prototype Appalachian Brookie rod. Beautiful little 3pc, 3wt that I'm going to have
to try tomorrow when we go out fishing... if we can find a place for a 3wt!!! Rivers are really up here. Bob does beautiful work on his signature model
rods... full intermediates... the whole enchilada!!!
More later.... Ralph |

This will be with my 1930, 2 7/8" Hardy Perfect. I tried the rod and it loaded well to about 60 ft. I don't know what year this rod was made,
someone in this forum will be able to answer this; this is my introduction to bamboo.
Thanks for the advice and ,who knows, maybe I will get this "bug" everyone has and continue buying bamboo! |

Ric,
Just an amazing rod that combines Payne, Leonard and Maxwell aesthetics... does it cast with the final turbo charge like a typical carpenter?
After enjoying some plastic on grip blue collar rods ie Heddon #125 expert and GV8040, I have been fortunate enough to receive the few really nice must-haves... A carpenter browntone 8' 2/2 5wt.. tissue wrapping removed immediately and fished.. the rod could cast up to 95ft and hooked a 2kg bass that got away.. A PHY/summers Perfectionist and a mint Brackett Winston Quad 7'9" 2/2
MV Brooks is sending me his Payne 200 and silks to restore my Leonard 50DF tournament ( Hewitt) and I'm into my roughing strips...Life is good! Thanks to Dan, Jim, John, Ed and of course Mike. Arthur |

Caddisman, I agree about Walt being the finest living rod maker. There are some awfully close seconds, including Bob Summers and Per Brandin, but Walt gets my
nod for number 1. Arthur, relative to your question, I really honestly have not had the time to take it out and lawn cast it. I need to, but I just spent 5
days up in Montana on the Missouri and have been catching up with work all week this week. I will let you know. I think it will cast somewhat differently from
the Browntones, given the swelled butt section, but I do expect it to have that final piece of energy in the forward cast that the Browntones seem to have. Ric

Jay,
I'm just learning and acquiring some good rods is the only way.. I will never be as cool as the Canefather ;-).. and believe me there are many more premium canes in Japan. Thanks Ric, we'll look forward to your impression of the Carpenter... either way, its a beauty! Thanks Quashnet and all for information regarding the rods... Oh yah, Dennis rubbed in the Winston Quad madness! Arthur
