A Mark Fitch Purist blank shortened at the butt 2 1/2 inches to create a staggered ferrule, 7'3" 4/5 weight. Fitch built blank, I only finished it
out. A surprisingly delicate cast. You would swear it was a 3 weight, tops. With the 16 foot front taper of the Snowbee delicate presentation line, there is
only the disturbance of the fly hitting the water. However, the rod really begins to load at 30-40 feet and will easily cast as far as any rod I own. Don

Well, almost... This rod gets it's final coat of varnish next week and goes out to the customer when the final coat is cured. Pictures aren't
great... cell phones just don't get it for good graphics, but they're handy to carry around the shop.
This one is just a plain jane rod, one of my Classic series with a nice reel seat wood and rattan handle. It's an 8 foot 2 piece 5 wt. It will easily cast a full fly line, but it casts tippet only very well also. The reel seat is Amboyna Burl, rubbed with about a dozen hand rubbed coats of linseed oil then dip finished with 3 very thin coats of spar varnish. Again, the cell phone picture doesn't do it justice. This reel seat looks like it's dipped in glass and the hardware is mirror bright finished. The reel seat hardware and ferrules are made in my shop.
The 4mm stripped cane handle has a red silk accent thread in the groove to compliment the guide and ferrule wraps. No fancy signature wraps on this one... just a plain trim wrap just in front of the start of the swelled butt. The winding check is also made in my shop. The swell in the butt section is more prevalent than my little cell phone picture shows. It swells 0.085" in 1.75".
The guides and tip tops are black wrapped with Chinese red and three turn black tipping. The tips are, of course, book matched. The guide wraps are very
consistent. I count the wraps on each guide as I wind it in place. Each size guide has a particular number of turns of thread.
No pictures of this, but this rod comes with a standard aluminum tube and bag (tan light canvas) and a red velour tube bag to protect the rod tube.

interesting wrap design on the ferrules. Is that your own creation or influenced from someone else?

Here are two more I'm just about to finish. The first one belongs to one of our board members. 6' 3/2 3 wt. There's something I didn't do on
this that's going to push it out another week... anybody spot it???? GLARING screwup, or ommission. I didn't see it until I brought it home today to
make the rod bag for it. Anyways, here's rod #1
The reel seat is made in my shop, with an Amboyna filler... love that wood!!!
Though it's hard to see in the photo, the red wraps on this rod are tipped in 4 turns of antique gold, with no color preserver. (This COULD have something to do with the photographer!!!)

Ferrule wraps | #188 | ||
|
Fisheye, I guess it's my own design, kind of...
I initially wanted to wrap my ferrules ala Winston, or rather as I've seen Chris Carlin do it. But wasn't able/had the patience to lay the thread evenly over the little "dips" on the ferrule. So I left a gap...
Might just make it my signature, though

Joe,
Great job. I really like how well the wrap colors match the agate guide. Good choice and excellent application. Bob |

Thanks Bob, I re-did the photos so they show the colors a little better. The guide wraps are a light tan tipped with brown and the ferule and signature wraps
are a darker brown yet, the reel seat is burl maple, still have to work on my photography.

My first blond | #198 | ||
|
All of the rods I've built up to this point have been either flamed or browntoned( ammonia toned),and that is still the look I like best.I had some
unusually blemish free strips so I decided this one would be a honey colored blond as I don't care for the light straw colored look.In fact,I only own 1
blond and that was one that I didn't make.It was a blank I bought earlier this year from Dennis Stone( Tapermaker) which is a great rod by the way. This one
is the stretched version(7') of the 6'8" F E Thomas 3wt.The only 3wt I've ever met that really does it for me.I was so pleased with the way
this rod turned out I took it to the MidAtlantic outing in Western Maryland 2 weeks ago despite the fact that it only had the 1st coat of varnish on it.My
daughter stopped by yesterday and like all good photographers, she always has her digital SLR in the vehicle.Just my luck! Now I didn't have to drive up to
her home in Pa. to get photos done.It had been in the drying cabinet for 72 hours (now wearing its' 2nd coat of varnish) so I took it out long enough for
her to do her thing. The cork grip looks darker than it really is as the reelseat and last 2 cork rings were in the sunlight, but the rest of the grip was in the
shade.Marty(Horsesho) allowed as that it was nice looking work.Andre and Matt both fell in love with the grip which was just a 5 1/2" cigar shape that I
slimmed down in the front half, and they both really liked the way it cast which made me feel pretty good about my efforts on this one.Hope you like
it.

Will, that is a nice looking rod and the taper sounds interesting. I am a big fan of 3 weight rods and like a little bit longer of a length which is why this
sounds interesting to me. How did you get the taper to 7' ?
