I have been lurking on this site for awhile and finally felt compelled to register and add a post after receiving a beautiful bamboo rod - my first - this
weekend. The rod in question is the one pictured above made by Matt Schliske (germanbrown).

Baby Catskill "Special" | #71 | ||
|
Last winter, in addition to my 3 rod regular production I decided to make a one tip Baby Catskill from the left over sticks of cane. I wanted to test myself
and see if I could plane tips splines down to .027 and if I could properly mount 8/64 stepdown ferrules. I followed the original finish characteristics of the
rod with a snake guide as the stripper, no winding check, simple wraps, a short reel seat that would only fit reels with a foot under 2" long and a cork
check made from the same wood as the spacer. Everything went very well and the rod was a delight to use last season (on calm days) with a 1wt line. I don't
own an original Leonard Baby Catskill but I do have one made by Ron Kusse and I used it as my guide. The weight of the Kusse rod is 1.83 oz and mine came out
weighing 1.76 oz (by the way the "one ounce" Leonard designation I think refers to the weight of the ferruled blank). I liked the rod enough to
decide that I should include it plus a second tip for last year's rod in this year's production schedule. This time the splices and resulting splines
were from the correct portions of the culm (they were somewhat mixed up last year,as I used whatever was left over). Also, since I did all right weight wise, I
decided to dress this one up, without making it too gaudy. Just finished varnishing it last week. The pictures below include a couple of side-by-side shots of
the rod together with it's spartan brother:
I had bought this diminutive reel seat some years ago and decided to use it since it accomodates reels with a foot up to 2 1/2". I think it is a Venneri.

Gillum Deluxe! | #73 | ||
|
This is a Gillum 7'9" 5/6wt. that I've just finished. Combined my love of the taper and the Granger Deluxe wraps to make my ideal fishing
utensil. Walnut insert, N/S hardware, homemade guides and brass ferrule plugs.
Next one of these I build will be up for sale. Feedback appreciated! |

grip , reel seat and ferrule plug are big leaf mapel burl, the cap of the reel seat has a inlay of the same burl and a mosaic pin, same for the ferrule plug.

Two, actually. | #79 | ||

A project I've wanted to do for some time. Two rods from the same taper, but with very different treatments. They are Payne 100s from the same culm. I call
them the Heritage and Heresy.
The Heritage is varnished, silk wrapped, with an agate stripper.The inscription, TTJP 100 (thanks to Payne's 100). It is lacking its final polishing. The Heresy is just Mike's Sauce and some bowling alley wax. Nylon wraps that were epoxied with just enough to hold them on, with single-foot guides. The inscription, ATJP100 (apologies to..).
I just took them out and snow-cast them (the lawn hasn't showed yet). The Heretic was better with an Orvis Wonderline WF4, and with a Terenzio artificial silk DT 4.5. The Heritage was equal to it with a Sage Quiet Taper 4. I'll be fishing the Heretic. Irreverence is one of life's spices, Henry. |
