that's the problem i have with much of the engraving being done (thought i think Bill Oyster has it just right), too much makes the rod look like a two dollar whore (is that too strong an image for you?
)

Taking DrCane and Bill Oysters comments to a personal level....I compare everything I like in rods, reels and fishing locations to a Winchester Model 12
(shotgun)...clean,simple....and can not be stopped from completing the job at hand.
Monty Montana.......by the way Mr. Kiley, hope you get to bring a couple of those examples to the Metolius shindig in a couple of months. very, very nice.

I just built my very first bamboo rod via Bill Oyster's rod making class a few weeks ago. Bill's shop is about an hours drive from me, so I took
advantage of his "weekend warrior" class where you build the rod over two three day weekends. Bill is an amazing teacher and really knows his stuff
when it comes to building fine cane rods. And he shows you how to do each step but then makes you do the work! Anyway, I built a sweet 7' 9" 4
weight with a crisp medium fast action. Anyway, here she is:

My 6th Rod. Thanks to all for the advice. Not sure I like how it came out (reel seat could have been a darker wood, and I need to work on the mortising a
bit). Used Peersalls Jasper with light yellow tipping at the tip and at the hook keeper. First time using Last N Last - need to work on the viscosity a bit.
Let me know what you think. Thanks.

My first rod. Dickerson 8015 guide special. Tried my hand at making my own ferrules too. They all still need a couple more coats of spar, otherwise I am pretty pleased with how they came out. Thanks for looking |

nick50,
You have a real talent. Impressive work. Nice eye for detail, and with a little more experience your rods will be flawless. Harry

I made this rod based on a #98 rod that I once owned. The ring was from an old Payne rod that was in the Highland Mills shop for repairs, and was blued at
one time. A trace of blue remains. He wanted the dinged ring replaced so I saved it all these years. Dave Decker wanted to "christen" this rod at
the Mountain Pool of the Beaverkill. Unfortunately, he passed away last winter. It has Payne type step-down ferrules, original Belding-Corticelli Java brown
silk from the Payne shop, brushed tung oil varnish.

Nick,Very nice work for so early in your rodmaking.I really like the browntone color of the cane in your rods.
Al, You do the Payne tradition proud!Very elegant rod and I like the fact that you left the old Payne ring dinged and didn't re-blue.It adds a really special touch to the rod. |
