I have developed a real fondness for the above and am interested in any information on different changes, styles, etc. that may have been offered over the
years. Any assistance on information, sites, etc. would be appreciated.

i'm familiar with the 1774-probably the most common. Brass frame, aluminum spool. Not a raised pillar. Small and cute maybe 2 1/2 " watch out for
rusted center post which will spin against the frame and not allow you to unscrew the spool.
When I match wits with a trout, I usually lose...

I also love the old pflueger progress reels in the skeleton style. There use to be a great web page that had lots of good info about these reels but I
don't think the link exists anymore. From what I remember, there were 2 main sizes: a 60 and an 80 yard.
There were 3 main variations of each: 1. All Gun metal 2. Gun metal frame with nickel plated spool 3. All nickel plated From looking on ebay I would say that it is hardest to find the all nickel reels with complete intact plating. It is also tougher to find a reel with fully intact gun metal without wear revealing the brass underneath. Lastly, the handles varied in terms of color and material used. Some are made of wood, and others bakelite (amber and black). I am not sure if the style of the handle can help to date the reel or not. Adam |

I just obtained a Progress 60 which came with a South Bend 359-8 1/2, Reel was so gunked up, I didnt know what it was and dont think the seller did either, any
way, after cleaning it, its an all brass progress 60 with the bulldog. I saw where someone referenced three types, but none were all brass (not a gun finish
wore off either) any idea on approx. value? Clicker very strong, no dents or defects. Thanks

The name was first applied to the skeleton reels, 1183-94, then 1783-94. The raised-pillar skeleton reels were made into 1946.
"The New Progress Reel in Round Pattern, Preferred by Many Anglers" 1774 came out before the war and was made into the 60s. Even when the name was discontinued to be made as the Trump. There was also a Japanese clone of the reel that was made even longer and sold in the UK - I forget the name, but if I see it, I'll post it. Here is probably the most complete set I know of, from a very dated post on ORCA. http://orcaonline.org/v-web/bulletin/bb/viewtopic.php?t=850&highlight=progress Might be worth contacting Paul for more information, or to buy his collection if its still for sale...
