I have a couple, not for long probably. I will keep my Winston Boron IIX 8'6"5wt with my Hardy. I paid to much to let it go! :-)

Orvis early-version 7'9" Far and Fine.
Hardy early-version (late '70s) 7' Smuggler, breaks down to about 18", the ultimate transportable rod. While without any doubt I'm a Cane Rod Man, sombody will stumble over those two plastic babies when the time comes for probate. |

I have kept all of my Sage LL's, SLT's and one Fli. I always want to fish bamboo, but sometimes, the situation calls for graphite.

9'3", 5wt. Orvis "Spring Creek" graphite from the early 1980's. It's the only graphite rod I have. I like it very much and have
fished it since 1984.

Diamonglass 8' 3pc. 5wt, made in Vt. I always preferred glass to graphite and have owned some nice ones from Lyons & McFarland but all were sold to
finance more cane except te D'glass. a sweet casting all-rounder.

I have only kept two graphite rods, an old Orvis Green Mountain rod and a Powell 4 piece pack rod. The Orvis Green Mountain was my very first "nice"
fly rod was given to me by my wife back in the mid 80's. At that time, we lived up in Saratoga Springs, NY and thus were only about 45 minutes away from
the Orvis flagship store in Manchester. Needless to say, I was over that way a lot to fish the Battenkill and to hang out at the Orvis store. Being a poor
military family, all my wife could afford to get me was the then entry level Orvis rod, a Green Mountain 8.5 foot 5 weight. It is an unsanded blank and was
finished with a cheap black aluminum reel seat, but it casts a country mile and is a pleasure to fish. A few years back, I had a buddy put a nice Streubel
reel seat with a pretty piece of Colorado Juniper as the insert. As much as I love my Orvis bamboo rods, I will always keep that old Green Mountain.
PS: good thread! |

what a choice | #51 | ||

I could usually get with any of the Winston IM6 rods as the best pick. I did come across an older Scott San Fran 9' 6wt 2pc that has the unusual (for a
6wt) cork downlock sliding band reelseat.

I guess I'm dating myself but my first fly rod was bamboo, a new Philipson 7&1/2' Peerless purchased for $40 on sale at the old Petrie's in
Madison, Wisconsin while in Graduate School about 1967. My buddy purchased an Orvis '99' for $60 at the same sale. We never looked at graphite.-Dick

Jaybird,
Yes , that Orvis 9'3" is real, real nice - beautiful hardware also. According to Datus Proper, that was the choice of Marinaro in later years - he fished it with a 6... enjoy... That would be my choice, plus a Orvis Far&Fine early edition and a 8/3/2 graphite, Powell Silver Signature- utterly special... NB |

Great Graphites and Glass | #55

I love all the materials glass, graphite and of coarse cane. In graphite the Winston Boron 8'6" for a five is the best casting trout rod I have ever
used. It just nails a long or short line better than anything I have ever used. In glass I love my diamond glass 8' 3p for a five. Also own all the Walt
Carpenter Traditional Graphites and they are casting machines. Really took the plunge over the last two years and picked up Mario Wojnicki Glass three piecers.
One is 8'2 for a five DT and the other is 8'3" for a DT 4 and both are unreal. The price is also unreal but I am really happy with both.

I've kept my first graphite... a San Fran. Winston pre-IM6, a Winston 4pc. travel rod, and 3 Catskill Research's which are parabolic wunderods and
it's too bad their factory burned down. Got my first and only glass rod as well, a Browning Silaflex. Rest is cane.

I have kept too many plastic rods mostly Sage and Winston but the one that I like most for spring creek fishing and that reminds me the most of cane is the
Winston IM6 8' 4wt. TMF (Tom Morgan Favorite). I think this rod has a nice medium full flex action which is a great substitute for cane when cane does not
work.

Graphite, still have'em... | #58
|
Well, I still have a forest of aluminum tubes in the corner of my home office (junk room!) with the graphite sticks tucked away hibernating. I just can't
seem to part with things that have good memories attached to them. So, yes, fish with boo 95% of the time, but still take out the graphite on special
occasion's. I also have a small collection of graphite that my fishing partner and mentor built, he made this nice little rod for one of our streams here
in R.I., it's called the "Wood River Special" a 6' 2pc 4-5 wt that's perfect for opening day with the kids, I also have 4 or 5 other rods
built by him that range from this little rod up to a great 9wt for blues and strippers. Since he passed a couple of years ago, not quite reaching the 70 year
mark, I would never part with any of these, ever. (Thank you Angelo)
I also have kept my early Orvis (unsanded) 6.5' 1oz. 2wt, fun little rod when you just don't want to pull out the boo and silk, also have (2) really neat graphite rods by "Ron Kusse" the first one is an 8' 2pc 4-5 wt that was built in "88", and that rod really looks like a custom made rod, Ron puts just as much detail and craftsmanship in these rods as his bamboo rods. This rod has a nickel silver ring that's hand fit to the end of the female furrle that helps keep it from cracking or stretching, great job Ron. I also have an earlier "86" rod that Ron made, it's an 8'-6" 2pc 7-8-9 wt with custom made fighting butt that sits in a pocket on the rod sock. This rod is made with what looks like super-z ferrules, but I could be wrong, maybe Ron custom made them? This is a great rod also. The 8' is probably the best graphite rod in the 4-5 wt range that I have ever used. I mostly fish the (1) Young I have (Drigg's), and the Young knock offs, but still have the graphite, just can't part with them...... |
