My best and favorite is an early 7'6" Fenwick HMG for 5 wt. that I bought in
1976. It was my only fly rod for 6 or 7 years until I bought a 8' 9" Orvis Western Series for 5 wt. Both rods are a pleasure to fish.

My Favorite:
Winston IM6 8.5 3pc 5wt Sage LL 9' 4wt Sage LL 7'11" 4wt Powell 7' 4/5 wt Dry Fly Sage SLT 9' 6wt 5pc Travel rod I recently fished a Sage 9' 6wt 3pc Z Axis, Large Native Lahontan Cutthroat Trout at Pyramid Lake near Reno. Great rod for tossing streamers, indicator fishing and turning big fish... Here's one of about 15 I caught, a 30.5 inch fish 10 plus pounds caught on a size 14 flashback PT nymph. The average size was 20-24 inches 4-6 pounds with a few beauties 28.5 in the 9 pound class.
The lake looks like Cabo San Lucas due to the green water and 27 miles in length.

How about the Sage LL's? | #66
|
I own and fish Sage 279LL, 379LL, 389LL, 4711LL, 486LL, 490LL, 581LL, 586LL, 590LL, and 690LL in addition to my bamboo rods. If I were to keep only two of the
graphites, they would be the 389LL and 4711LL. For airplane travel, I also have a Sage RPL 790-4 for saltwater, and a TXL 3710-3 for Spring creeks. I think the
Sage LL's were the best fly rods for trout that that company has produced so far.

Retro,
I am also partial to early Sage LL's. I have a 590 (graphite II) and a 590-4, as well as a 379-3. All LL's. Just for fun I have a first gen Orvis Ultrafine 7'9" for a 2wt (it casts a 3 or 4 very nicely). No plans to add any more carbon at this time. Marc |

what graphite rod did you keep? | #68

I have an 8-foot, 4-weight Superfine, a four-piece. It's a great all-rounder for trout fishing. I see that a lot of you have held onto your Sage LLs. They
were wonderful. I suppose it's marketing, but I've never been able to figure out why Sage quite making them. They were the best looking graphites, as
well.

original sage graphite? | #70

perhaps someone here can help me. I have an old sage rod of my father's that I know nothing about and can't seem to get info on it and curious as to
whether anyone here can tell me a little more about it and when it was made, etc...
It's a 2 piece sage that is grey. All it says is: Sage Graphite #6 line 7'9" Did this precede the Graphite II? Anyway, any insight would be greatly appreciated |

Got a bunch, but they mostly for use as loaners for visitors at the cabin, but there are four that are always in the truck. First, a Burkheimer 8'9"
2-pc "Trouthunter" model specced as 3-4-5, and #2, a Sage Graphite III RPL 9' 4-pc for a 6. The other two keepers are both Hardy Ultralites (ca.
1998); both 3-pc and 8'6"; one for a 4 (my wife's choice) and the other for a 5.

I own about a dozen graphite rods; just donated a Sage 590 RPL to our annual Black Hills Flyfishers auction and may donate additional rods in years to come.
But they don't take up much room in the racks (and would for the most part be more trouble to try to sell than it would be worth), so I'm likely to
have them around for the foreseeable future. The stand-outs: 1) my all-time favorite general trout rod, which is a 5 piece 8'4" Scott G Model for 5
weight line 2) a new and wonderful 2 piece 8' Winston WT Tom Morgan Favorite for 4 weight line, which is proving to be a real delight and which may be the
best-casting rod of any type I've ever run across. I enjoy cane and fiberglass rods also, and I think that the material of construction is not really
important so much as the way the rod was designed. It does seem that there is more appreciation these days for trout rods with more moderate action qualities
(including graphites such as the old superfine Orvis rods, the Scott G rods, and IM6/WT Winston rods) as well as cane and good fiberglass rods.

This is a very interesting thread for someone like me who really likes the "classic" graphites. Although most of my fly rods are fiberglass, I have
kept my G-series Scotts - G1004, G904, G904/4, G908B, and G855. I have also kept a late 70's Orvis Allrounder, a Pre-IM6 907 Winston, a Winston IM6 904, a
Fenwick HMG 908 and a Russ Peak 8' 3-4-5.
All of these rods tend to be on the slow side of graphite, which I think makes them appealing to both the glass and bamboo folks. I think it would be difficult for even the most dedicated bamboo fly fisherman to dislike a San Francisco G-series Scott. |

Fisher 9' 4/5 and 8'6" 6/7
Winston pre-IM6 9' 6wt Peak 8' 7" 5-6-7 four piece Peak 6'6" 4/5 w/ns ferrules Peak 9'1" 4-5-6 Peak 8'7" 6-7 Powell Signature Series 8034 The Fisher's are very underrated. The longer Peak's have not been getting fished much, not wild about their tip heaviness (all have cork reel seats except the four piece). I would say my current favorite is the Powell, Chico built, that I like to fish with a WF4. |

About 15 years ago I got an Orvis Power Matrix 805 (8' 5 wt) from an ex-girl as a gift. Absolutely horrible trout rod in my opinion but will cast a WF8
with Bass Bugs. It is just starting to flex with the WF8. I think a WF10 may be the ticket (not really joking) . I have kept it because of the warranty and
will let my son use it as he is learning to fly fish.
