Posts: 10 04/29/2008 00:05	Tags : None Hi all and thank you for your time and knowledge in advance. I just dipped the butt sectin of my rod in Helmsman Spar Urathane and as it came out I could see I did not seal the wraps good enough (blotches). Used Varathane Diamond. My question is if I remove the wraps and replace are they going to look like crap when I dip the rod again? What would be the best way to go about this as easy as possible? Last Question. How long do I have to wait to do this? I have a trip coming up soon and I would like to use this rod. Thanks for your time. Regards, Anthony

Posts: 554 04/29/2008 00:41	Your best bet is to strip the whole thing down again and rewrap and redip. If you have a vintage rod and are trying to preserve the inscription it's going to be tough, hopefully it's a new one. Trying to cut off the wraps and redo the wraps and brush on new varnish will take you more time then stripping and redipping. That new varnish is going to be tough to get off too, use an extremely liberal dose of 3M Safest Stripper and let it sit on there a couple hours. Then use acetone and cotton balls, rag, qtips, fingernail, etc... to get the rest off. Or else learn to live with the blotches until after the trip. Color perserving wraps is an art, search this forum for CPing tricks.

Posts: 33 04/29/2008 10:49	Being a not very competent novice I have had this problem several times. I have just done a proper strip and re-wrap of a rod that I used last season with a number of cosmetic defects, simply as I was using the rod a lot, really liked it, and did not have time to sort it out. I did do a half job replacing a too heavy stripping guide which made it look worse but work better. But the reality is that to get the cosmetics sorted I have found you have to strip it back and start again.

Posts: 570 04/29/2008 22:59	Anthony; Your best bets with any color preserver are to either varnish the blank first, or varnish with a brush or spray it, don't even try to dip over color preserved wraps, it's not worth the aggravation. john

Posts: 506 05/06/2008 20:20	John--even spraying is no guarantee. I tried spraying and in general am happy with the results. I laid on 2 light coats without any issues, the CP held with no blotches. Then I did one heavy coat to finish off and the darned stuff managed to find some paths under the foot tunnels. I swear I shoveled some Al's CP in there but apparently not enough. Anyway I at least had enough sense to only do the test sprays on one tip so now I have gone back and globbed in the Al's CP in the tunnels on the butt and other tip in preparation for spraying them. I figure I'll just fish the blotchy tip until I am ready to rewrap it. For the future I don't plan on doing many more CP'd wraps and if I do they'll be done on an impregnated or finished blank--Larry Last Edited By: FlyDoctor 05/06/2008 20:24. Edited 1 time.

Posts: 803 05/06/2008 20:55	Four good coats of shellac on the wraps. Then 3-4 coats of varnish on the wraps, shaving off any "nubs" between coats with a razor blade. Let dry, then dip. Never had a problem. Try a sample stick first and experiment. T120
