Why is a DRAKE called a drake. I thought maybe because they are a larger may fly, but now I see there is a size 12 drake.

The insect that the English specifically call a "May fly" (as opposed to all the members of the Ephemeroptera that Americans call
"mayflies") is large and impressive. I suspect that in flight it made some imaginative observers think of dragons or - to use the older English term
for "dragon" - drakes.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of 290 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories,
etc. Thank you to all who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

It sure made one influential
think as Quash posits:
"The Drake will mount steeple-height into the air; though he is to be found in flags and grass too, and indeed everywhere, high and low, in the river." I. Walton, The Compleat Angler. The definition of drake as dragon is found Middle English, as quash points out, as well as Middle Low German, Middle Dutch, and so on, so it was of fairly "universal" usage. These terms get adopted and applied loosely in fly fishing, then spread out to apply over more territory in fairly creative fashion, though some of the archaic definitions apply rather directly, as in "dub": 3. "The act of ...rubbing or dressing, so as to make smooth or otherwise adapted to a purpose." And then, they enter the lexicon. 5. Materials used for making the body of a fishing-fly (1889).. It originally meant to touch with the sword in the ceremony of Knight hood or to invest with armor. <ME. dubben. with Latin roots as well. Whether or not you'll catch more fish knowing this is arguable, but it is one more of the interesting sub-subjects of the sport. Now for "dun". Wally.
