Saracione 2 1/2" |
Lead | ||
|
Just received an early Saracione 2 1/2" reel. What a little beauty. It is built with a removable back for quickly releasing the spool, but of course it
did not come with an extra spool. Does anyone else have one and is there a way of obtaining an extra spool. Would Bill Archuletta consider making one? I have
sent him an inquiry but I live in Canada and shudder on the idea of having to ship the reel across the Canadian-US border with the unavoidable customs
complications.

I live in the US and have shipped/received many items to/from Canada with absolutely zero problems so I wouldn't let that keep you from dealing w/ Arch!
BTW. I for one would love to see some pics of your new toy, including innards, etc.

Alex -
Congrats on the new reel and I like Trotter would like to see some eye candy of it........
Would your new reel happen to be the one Bob S. was selling on his website? Mark B |

Yes the reel came from Bob. Finally got some time to snap some pictures. By the way I got a reply from Arch saying that he does not have the required tooling to make an extra spool for it. I think Saracione is back in business making reels, so I will try and see if I can get in touch with him. Perfect size and balance for this Degere ICPHS taper rod

Alex -
Thanks for the pics and congrats on a great looking reel ! I especially like the back plate / spool release which is very interesting. I doubt if there were many of these made so I appreciate seeing your photos as it's likely the closest I'll ever get to one. Mark B |

What Siskiyou Designs was using on theirs. Nice! One of these days I'll get up the pictures of a Godfrey Letort with 1.9:1 multiplying gear at about 2.5
inches.

Yes Chris the back plate removal method is very similar to the Winston Vintage (Siskiyou) Reels which have a different locking mechanism. Also similar to the Robichaud removable back plate reels. I don't know who came first but this one is by far the simplest design and seems to be foolproof. Apparently the Saracione Manufacturing Company still makes removable back plate reels but only in the salmon sizes and the smallest trout reel is 2
3/4". I think the chances are that if I want an extra spool I'll have to make it myself

Is there any indication of the model? It looks a lot like the SCA reel, but I don't recall those having a wooden handle. Although you don't have a
front-on shot of the backplate, it sure appears to be the SCA style of backplate. That's the only place I can remember Joe using a removable back cover,
and even then he only did it on the gear and pawl models. When he switched to the disc drag in the larger sizes, he quit using the removable backplate. If it
is an SCA, it dates from about 1985-1988 or so.

Whoops! I guess I just didn't wait long enough for all the photos to download. You do have a photo of the backplate and the guts and it sure appears to me
to be an SCA. Perhaps the wooden handle was a special request or perhaps it was done later by someone other than Joe. For that matter, maybe my memory is going
south. It's a beautiful reel in a very desirable size, that's for sure.

JR SPEY:
Is the SCA designation an acronym that has any meaning or just a simple model type?

Saracione Classic American. It was his first venture into traditional reels.

JR SPEY - your recollection about the handles is correct. I have some of those original reels and they all came with black handles. I also saw quite a few that
went to others and none had a wood grain handle. Have used mine for trout and steelhead and they are all still functioning perfectly. Though Joe is back in the
reel business, he doesn't have all the parts for the many different reels he's made in the past.

It might be even more accurate to say he has very few parts from previous reels. And he's so busy with this new project that I doubt he'd take the time
to make something unless it was for a warranty repair. Joe is also, unfortunately, often very pokey about getting things done and back to you. I send my
Saracione repairs to Bill Archuleta. If Bill can't make a spool for this reel, then you'll probably not be able to acquire one. The 2.5" size was
very scarce to begin with, and the reel hasn't been current for about twenty years, so it truly would be like trying to find a needle in a haystack.
