Two Slaters and a Malloch |
Lead | ||

I've become quite fond of David Slater reels. Very high build quality and good looking to boot. The middle reel - a Malloch made for A&NCS has an
unusual side mounted drag adjustment.

I would place the Slater reels at between 1885-1895 so its certainly possible they were made during Dingley's tenure with David Slater.
Slater had been supplying Hardy with Nottingham and Hercules style reels since the 1880s so there's the connection that brought Dingley from Newark to Alnwick.

The middle reel is also a Slater.
David Slater supplied so many reels to so many companies. The range of reels supplied to Hardy Bros would shock some people and hopefully sometime next year a major article will show these reels. |

Those Slaters are indeed magnificent looking. They look relatively small. Could you tell us their size?

The first reel Slaters New Style Salmon & Trout Reel to give it it's full title was 9 sizes from 2 1/4 inch to 5 inch.
The middle reel is basically the same but with what I think was Bernards Patent Drag system circa 1910. The SEJ Fly Fishers Winch was sold in two sizes 2 3/4 and 3 1/2 inches.

Other than the SEJ Winch engraving, your reel is pretty much an exact match to my SEJ reels - I say reels as I picked up a 3 1/2" since I took these
pictures.
The two smaller reels are 2 3/4" and the larger ones 3 1/2". The small all brass one just sings when you give it a turn. Really exceptional build quality. While I haven't fished them yet, one will be making the trip to Esthwaite Water in late September when we will be in the Lake District for a week. Angling tips gladly accepted! Stefan - thanks very much for the additional info on the A&NCS reel with the unique brake system. I'd always assumed it was a Malloch. Any idea what "SEJ" stands for?

Bill, you're in the UK?
I've not fished Esthwaite but heard good reports. There is some nice River fishing with beautiful surroundings just up the road. PM me if you want some details (we don't want everyone knowing?) Brian |

So you Canadians buy up all our reels, corner the market in Dingleys, Slaters and classy Perfects . . . then bring them over here to catch our fish . . ??
Globalisation huh?
Enjoy! |

Its worse than you imagine Brian - my family is originally from The Borders so lets just say reiving is in the blood.
Oh and I've decided to conceed all future Dingley exploitation to the Albertans, an exotic Canadian sub-species.

We ended up on the South side of the border once it stopped moving. Little village called Matfen - got married there actually.
Knowing my family history I think its still likely I owe you some livestock. The sheep were used for dubbing though so I should get a partial credit.

Some people consider that I am a Slater nut, I have more than 150 different Slater reels
from 2 1/4 inches to 8 inches in wood, brass, ebonite, aluminium and German silver, a friend has about the same. The thing is that they are nearly all
different. I also own all six of the known issues of the Slater catalogues from 1890 to 1911.
Two Slater reels the first one a Slater's New Style Trout reel 2 1/2 inches the second Slater's Special Aluminium Trout Reel 2 3/4 inches, both stamped and both with German silver screws |

Thank you, Bill Charles and Stefan. I've been fond of that reel's looks but was always curious about its origin. Thanks for the wealth of
information. I must say...that combination of brass, aluminium, ebonite, nickel silver and cow's horn definitely has that certain je ne sais quoi...do
you know what I mean, man!
