More goodies just in time for Christmas. The "Drianoil" and the black "Harlaw" dry fly oiler finally arrived from the UK and I just picked
up a "Wardle" magnifier that looks to have never been used.

I 'found' this recently at a local auction; not sure if it's a gismo or a contraption but I love it. Solid Mahogany, Dovetailed joints.
Going to have to beg an awful lot of Flys to fill it . .

The latest addition...
...a pair of "Malloch of Perth" fly tying scissors with a nickle-silver tip guard.
First I've ever seen.

It's been far too long between fixes for me and I was glad to add this cool Hardy box & bottle to my collection.

reelhimin wrote: Thanks Gary. Here is another tough one that just arrived ...the Hardy "Waistcoat Pocket Fly Oil Bottle". This little bottle with raised lettering in the glass, can be seen in the 1909 catalog. The raised lettering says "Hardy Brothers Ltd., Alnwick, Fill To The Line". The sleeve inside the bottle prevents the oil from spilling so long as the instructions are followed. Very cool ...and incredibly hard to find. Dean.

Okay ...so you guys aren't much into bottles. How about vises? I've been after a Paul Young vise for years but never found just the right one, until now. All the others I have seen (about a half dozen in 30 years) had a base that the tier would screw into his bench. I had always hoped I'd find one with a clamp and last week I did. Not only does this one have a clamp, but the neck pivots left/right/up/down and it folds for travel. Very cool.
A wonderful addition to my vise collection: http://www.chronosmith.com/?dp=Vises%2F

Thanks, Scott.
According to Bob Summers the vise is Circa 1935 and was made for Paul by a small shop in Detroit. Dean. |

This is the highest grade (of three available grades) PHY "Sportsman" vise, exactly as shown in the 1933 PHY catalog. By 1937 there were four models,
and the fittings of the higher-grade models had changed slightly from what is seen on this excellent example.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
455 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Thanks, Bob. "Highest Grade" seems about right. It really is a stellar piece.

Today, while travelling for work, I stopped in a fly shop to continue my never ending hunt for cool old fishing related stuff. I could not believe my eyes when I found this box ...
I think I have seen 3, maybe 4 of these in all of my years of collecting, have always wanted one and at last I do.

Here's something I think is neat. The book is called Hamlet Travestie and this is a first edition published in 1809.At sometime in the distant past
someone decided to make a flybook out of it. They hollowed out some of the pages, added some muslin and some flies and stitched it up. It was found in an
attic in England wrapped in newspaper dated 1932. Some of the flies are gut eyed and all of the leader is brittle. Nice looking flies though.

That is really neat ...a 200 year old first-edition made into a fly book. Very cool.
Thanks for showing us. Dean. |
