Bob Summers' Rods |

I have become a big Bob Summers fan. There are a couple threads about Paul Young tinkering with his tapers. My question is has Bob tinkered with his tapers
or have they been the same over his building career?

Never asked him directly, but the Model 75 I have from 1975 and one circa 2000 I have seen seemed remarkably similar in taper and feel (didn't measure,
just cast together). I have also seen 275's together that seemed to be 4/5ish and all the same, as far as Y could tell. I'm sure Dave (Poudre) would
have a better idea first hand from his own collection.
One thing I like about his earlier (70 - early 90's) rod sis the cane seemed to generally be that more mottled flamed look like Youngs; the more recent examples of Summers tend to be that more uniform dark color - maybe a switch in cane batch or flaming process? I'm not sure. as they say, it's all good. |

Isn't it time someone did a podcast interview with Mr. Summers and ask all the questions we would like to know?
Maybe we could ask Zach Mathews to do a podcast interview with questions collected by Summers-fans on this forum? Zach Mathews makes great podcast interviews on his site The Itinerant Angler (http://www.itinerantangler.com/). Jay Ps. I'll ask Zach about this.

poudre1 wrote: Regarding the 275 question above, one of my 275s (built in 1990) is 1" shorter than my other 275s. In fact, my other 275s will not even fit into the rod tube of the shorter rod. I never asked Bob about this, doesn't really matter, it's a beautiful rod and casts great.
dave, funny that should mention your rod is a bit short, I have an 856 (made 1982 with three tips; light dry, intermediate and heavy parabolic) that's also not quite 8 foot. I couldn't care less... best from krautland, christian

Here's a pic of my Summers 856 w/two light tips built in 1978. Beautifully flamed and what a cannon.

Summers 856, built in 1982 for Michigan angling author Dan Catau.
Para 15 built by Summers, 1967, for Bob Church, another Michigan author. The Para 15 has two "wet" parabolic tips and is a beefier rod than the Catau 856, which with three different tips offers a greater range of casting possibilities.
Summers 275, built 1986.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
320 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Some beautiful examples of Bob's work!!!...Flyfishbill, I really envy you, I have a model 64 on order (keeping my fingers crossed).
I had my Para 15 (built by Bob while at PHY Co) and a 856 out the other day casting them, I could tell very little difference between them in action.

Phew... Nice set FFBill!
BTW, just posted some pictures of my trip I just returned from (barely 3 hours ago!). I fished my Summers 275 almost the whole trip. Check them out at: http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/16403?page=-1 |

Thanks guys for the compliments. I hope to add an 856 to the family. Bob is donating an 856 to this year's Boardman River project. I have my fingers
crossed.
