I have the chance to buy a Granger W&M "Special" 8 foot rod. Not much more information. Can I assume that this is an 8040, best used with a 5
weight line? Thank you.

If all pieces are 32.5" it's a 8040. It's normally a 5 wt. but I sometimes load a 4 wt. on mine to speed up the action. The butt can sometimes be
longer if the uplocking reel seat isn't closed down all the way. What model is it? The higher grades are worth more.

Granger made only one 8-foot fly rod taper, the 3/2 8040 (8-foot; 4 oz.) It's one of their very best.
That said, don't assume anything when buying a cane fly rod. Make sure all sections are 32.5" long and, preferably, that the rod is in original condition. Assemble the rod and observe the fit of the ferrules and that none are loose...either metal-to-metal or metal-to-cane. The Special is a good looking rod and can be found wrapped either Granger green or a soft yellow gold. The Goodwin Grangers are probably worth a bit more than the Wright & McGill era rods and take a DT-4-F as opposed to a 5 wt. for the later rods. Let me know if you have other questions and GOOD LUCK with your purchase! Regards, Flyman

Ask about the weight. With the Granger reel seat, it should weigh no more than 4 1/2 oz. If it weighs significantly more than that, it could be a cut-down rod.
You can also ask for the taper measurements. The Granger 8040 taper has been widely published.

Thats very wise advise Lon. I never thought about it til you mentioned it.
Wonder how many cut downs are out there. Brian
