Posts: 418 07/24/2008 20:50	Tags : None Because no one else has come forward with a plan for a gathering this year, Bill Agnew and I thought we would see how many people would like to fish western Maryland this fall. I have spoken with several people that have expressed interest. Fishing consists of the Savage, North Branch of the Potomac and the Youghiogheny--all within about 30 minutes drive of each other. The Savage and Yock have only wild fish and theNorth Branch has both. Because all are tailwaters (the Yock is partially) and we have had decent rain, water levels should be good. I have found accommodations for the nights of Sept 12,13. Can also do Thursday 11th if desired. Three houses side by side on the Savage are available. Would also be available for late Oct if more people would rather do a later date. I am willing to coordinate the housing and will cover one of the houses once I have enough verbal commitments (and then quickly followed with a check to me). If interested post here or send me a PM. Below are the details of the houses. The Rainbow Chalet has 3 bedrooms (2 Queen Beds, 2 twin beds) and 1.5 bathrooms, a large kitchen and a very large family/living room and sleeps 6. The cost for 2 nights is $425, it is $180 per night plus $40 cleaning fee and taxes (6% sales and 5% Garrett Co. accommodation tax). The weekly fee is $1150. The Rainbow is our only dog friendly home and there is an additional $40 pet fee if you bring a dog. The 2 bedroom (1 queen, 2 twin) Brownie Cottage has 1 large bathroom, a sleeping porch with washer and dryer, a game room with poker table, living room with a fireplace and a large new kitchen with a dishwasher and sleeps 4/5. The cost for a week is $975.00 plus a $40 cleaning fee and tax (6% sales and 5% Garrett Co. accommodation tax). The 2 day charge is $375, each additional night is $160. The 2 bedroom (1 full, 2 twin) Brookie Cottage has 1 bathroom and sleeps 3-4. The cost for 2 nights is $350, each additional night is $150. The weekly charge is $850. Of course, Andre will want to stay in the Brownie Cottage depending on what's in the brownies. Thanks to you and Bill for putting this together. I'll check on that weekend and get back to you.

Then it's on to Vermont to pick up the byrdog before doing a little landlock salmon and brookie fishing. W. MD is a great place to have a gathering, plenty of fishing options! Have fun! Tim

Posts: 800 07/25/2008 22:58	Bucktrout, Once you get a date finalized,make sure you post it here.I would definately like to attend at least one day.That being said,the Sept. dates you posted would in all probability be out for me.That is the same weekend as the Catskills Rodmakers gathering,which I plan on attending this year.Anytime in Oct. will find me spending my Saturdays bowhunting in Allegheny Co.but could slip on up to Garrett Co. for a day of fishing on Sunday.As of this time the last 2 weekends of Sept. are completely open for me.I'm not sure where your info came from but the Savage and the Yough both have stocked areas as well as wild fish.Two well known rodmakers live in the area and might want to attend also.Allen Noland lives in McHenry,Md.(right next to Deep Creek Lake) and the even better known R.W. "Bob" Lancaster lives on the other end of Deep Creek Lake in Oakland.Cheers,Will

Posts: 420 07/26/2008 07:10	Drake, You're correct on the fish--my faulty memory. On the Yock the fish are all stocked as fingerlings and on the Savage I believe all fish below the dam in the special regs are wild fish. Is that correct?

Posts: 803 07/26/2008 10:31	The Yough gets 2000 trout stocked (500 on 4 seperate occassions) in the Friendsville section and 5000 in the Oakland/Sang Run area.I'm pretty sure that the Savage,even in the special regs area gets the occassional freshening though most of the fish in that area are wild.I'll see if I can get in touch with Howard Stinefelt(DNR biologist) and let you know.Sprucie mentioned the native brookie streams,and there are many in Garrett Co., and it made me remember something that was quite a shock when I became aware of it.Back in the 70s' Howard Stinefelt led a team of DNR biologists that was cataloging all of the coldwater resources in the state.He put on a slide show presentation for the Potomac Valley Fly Fishermen of Frederick,Md. and the shocker for most of us? The fact that as wild,mountainous and low populated as Garrett Co. is,they found more streams with self sustaining brookie populations in Baltimore Co. than anywhere else in the state.The only conclusion one could come up with is the fact that strip mining for coal in Garrett Co. probably had a lot to do with this.

Posts: 1074 07/26/2008 16:51	Since Rolf is in I feel like I must add a warning here. Hide the Oban! That's not it, although it's appropriate. The Savage and the North Branch of the Potomac have some of the greasiest rocks I've ever stepped on. They are well known for this. Cleated wading shoes and or a wading staff are highly advised. For someone of the Cooler's reputation, the brookie streams, the Yough and the kiddie pool at the Comfort Inn are more suitable venues. G

Ralph Ralph, It's so good to hear that your wife is making progress and improving.Any of the following cities will put you on track(all in Maryland obviously) Frostburg or Westernport.Keep in mind that while Maryland is just below the Mason-Dixon line we have imposed a ban on any of the following imports from the South: grits,excessive heat and humidity,rebel yells or any open display of the Stars and Bars!!While I love Garrett Co. and have been frequenting those hills hunting and fishing since I was 16(1964) you still occassionally run into residents of the area that will make you think you are in the movie"Deliverence".Cheers,Will Last Edited By: greendrake ll 08/06/2008 10:38.
