I want to share my impressions and pictures of a new rod delivered to me in June 2008. I am a novice at posting pictures on a forum so the pictures do not due
justice to the rod.
Tom Nigro of Spring Creek Rods has started hollow building his rectangular-quad rods this year and this rod (serial number MB 08-2) is one of the first. It is a hollow built R-Quad, 2/2, 7' 8" rod for a 5 weight line.
Tom's "browntone" flaming of the cane results in a beautiful medium brown color that is striking with the lighter color of the nodes. His standard translucent light olive silk wraps complement the color of the cane perfectly. The options that I specifed include blued nickle silver hardware, mildrum stripping guide, Tom's custom reel seat, and his F.E. Thomas style winding check/ hook keeper. It all adds up to a "classic rod style" which I prefer.
Tom is an absolute delight to work with. Over a two year period he developed tapers and adapted his hollowing building technique to his solid built R- Quad rods. His knowledge of rod tapers is excellent and he understood what I wanted in this rod. He sent me protypes for me to cast and changed tapers to my preference. I think he nailed the taper for a 5 weight rod. I cast a variety of lines and prefer a DT5F with this rod. The rod has a smooth progressive action (medium-fast) and transmits the casting energy to the leader perfectly. It will cast a 13 foot leader straight and flat, and lands softly. The cast line is dead straight without shock waves. The rod casts 20 to 75 feet with ease. The rod is very accurate at any distance. It is easy to cast and handles the wind in Montana well for a 5 weight rod. I have fished this rod and it is also a good fish fighting tool. I have "abused" this rod on some hog pen rainbows greater than 10 pounds. I am very pleased with the performance and appearance of this rod.
