Where are you buying your flies? |

For those of you who don't tie, where do you buy your flies? There is really no place for me locally. I'll patronize some of the local places where I
fish in Colorado but typically use internet discount sources when I'm stocking up for the season.

I am a huge fan of Solitude Flies. You pretty much need to order them from a dealer, unless you can set yourself up, but IMHO their flies are just the best. Their mayflies are just awesome! |

firehole wrote: What Firehole said....(geez I hate always agreeing with Dennis) I've given Jim Hill a few orders, primarily when I first began a number of seasons ago and the flies were very nicely done! I've had no trouble with them and found then very well done even in the smaller sizes, 20's and 22's! I did have a couple of sets that came in a bit larger by mistake. A phone call got me another batch sent out and I was told to just keep the larger ones. Certainly the flies are tied offshore because they're quite inexpensive (notice I didn't use the 'cheap' word) but even in the smaller sizes I was impressed enough with the quality to call and mention a thanks to him! He's a fine guy to talk with. I tie my own now. It's just been a natural progression for this boy. Highly recommended! Jeremy. |

Another vote for Hill's. I have bought from him in person at one of the sports shows. He seems like a great guy, and his flys are a great value.

For several years, I bought quite a lot of flies (and still have most of them) from various on-line sources and even a few from local "box-stores."
Although some of the patterns did catch fish, I usually wasn't happy at the quality and or personal satisfaction in catching fish with flies tied by an
unknown person in some far-off country, using various materials of "unknown" origin or quality.
Since I was also assembling many of my rods and refinishing a bunch of silk lines, I decided to take up tying my own flies, especially since the patterns that I wanted to use (and buy) weren't readily available on the market (try to find a realistic Tup's or Hares' Lug and Plover in a local store!), I decided to tie and fish my own flies. Needless to say, after spending mucho dollars on getting many books and materials, I now find that I can tie what I want, when I want it, and get the personal enjoyment of catching "The Elusive Spotted Dace" on rods and flies that I have put together. If an individual has a decent vise (I use a Tierra del Fuego) and starts of with several silk spools and several bird skins and dubbings, the variations that can be tied are quite large and the satisfaction gained even larger. My apologies for straying from the original posting of "where to buy" flies ..... and I would wholeheartedly suggest that anyone who really is "into" fly fishing, take the extra step and start tying your own flies .... there's no going back ! Cheers and Safe Fishing Bob PS - To me, the search in finding some of the original or specified alternative materials to tie some of the old dressings is part of the fun of tying flies ... even if the cost per fly of some dressings aren't realistic - the fact that one has flies that few others fish is substantially greater than the expenditures involved..... snobbish, elitist, etc. .... but still fun ! |

Thanks to my being appointed chief fly tester and sales rep for BH Boobie's flies, I just take what looks good out of his bag full of boxes with thousands
upon thousands of various flies.
I can say this for the boy. What he lacks in tying talent and creativity, he makes up in volume. Bob- , BTW, I'm running short. We need to go fishing again. gofish |

Which ones do you need ? Bob PS - Want to try some of the "revised" Crackleback-type with a rainbow tail and / or flashback (instead of the peacock)?

I was wondering how long it would take you to react. 4 minutes-pretty darn good.
Only kidding about needing flies. The weather and high streams has pretty much slowed everything down. I've been fishing poppers for bass on the lake. Love to try some of the new cracklebacks, tho. Those things are good. They work as well for panfish and bass on the lake as they do on trout. And, unlike trout, I keep lake panfish, which makes Mrs. Gofish very happy. gofish |

Will mail them (old and new palmers) to you ASAP (the ASAP is NOT a noun!). Hugs to Mrs. Gofish Bob PS - Sorry for this "late" response .... late shower due to the thunderstorms. |
