Does anyone own a cane rod made in China.
If you do what do you think, quality and casting abilities.

Careful with this thread. Similar ones are routinely deleted.

Why? Don't seem to be harmful or bashing. I prefer American craftsmen, but not everyone can afford a rod made here. Chuck |

Well I.ve had a couple in my hand and notiing all of the above caveates, the plain simple truth is that they were pretty damned good for the price as well as
decent finish and cosmetics. I have no idea how many sources are sending rods but these were worth mort than the asking price. I'd say they were better
than most back porch hand planers and probably on a par with a "semi-pro". Both were medium actions.

I wish I had a pretty Chinese girl to wrap my rods for me. I bet those small dexterous fingers can lay down the silk thread. (As I write this I can hear David
Bowie "My little China girl" playing in my head)

I'm going to tiptoe thru this :
Last fall I got to talking with a fella in the parking lot about the streams flies. We got on the subject of older reels somehow and I pulled out a JWYoung attached to fiberglass Granger. He noticed the name Granger and we talked some more.. so I mentioned I have a few older rods made from Granger in the 40's, an old cane rod. He then asked me about his bamboo rod.. . He started off telling me he got a deal on it and that its a name brand. A very well known name it struck me. He strung it up and we cast it. I think it was a 7ft 4wt 2tipper. I thought it cast fine. Kinda looked real nice / shiny too.. but it was getting late in the day. The rod looked good though.. and I new it was made overseas. I asked him if he had any others.. and he said - No, my wife bought me this.. I'll probably only fish it twice a year. So IMHO, for the fella who wants a one or two time out a year rod - It'll probably do its job. If I fished it 10-20 times a year in my rotation.. I might / would see things totally different. Without getting into the politics of it all .. if its all a guy can afford and he is happy with a one a day special fly fishing rod that he cherishes without even knowing where it came - what should we say to him ? At least he is fishing.. Brian

can't imagine it had a 'very well known name' on it unless it was a counterfeit

Yes, people all over the world build nice bamboo rods. It is good when people build bamboo rods and take pride in their own work. AJ has a legitimate beef when
people put the well-known name of another rodmaker on their rods, thus threatening his livelihood.
We've been here before. Usually we go here in Northern Hemisphere winter when a lot of people can't fish, and start getting the shack nasties. As a moderator, I want to go fishing now. I'm locking this thread. |
