Posts: 3 08/04/2008 20:18	Tags : None I have a rod that I stripped off the old varnish and then rewrapped with a Gossamer Antique Gold and tipped it in Black. When I gave it the first coat I had what looked like a stain on areas of the thread. It seemed to me to be contamination. So I took of the thread and cleaned up the rod section and rewrapped it again. Again I had the appearance of the same condition. I know that I cleaned the blank and wiped the guides and winding check with alcohol to remove any grease. My hands were washed. What am I not doing that I should be doing? It isn't a great rod, but I would like to make it as nice as I can for myself. Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this situation.

Posts: 201 08/04/2008 20:50	Tom, Can you post a picture? That would tell the tale for sure. That Gossimer is extremely fine stuff. If you've made overlaps when wrapping, it will result in dark streaks. If it's not this, your thread might actually be contaminated. You're not holding it between your fingers to manipulate where it lays are you? Oils from your hand could be causing this if you are (hand washing won't stop you from sweating, and if you're like me wrapping can certainly cause you to sweat!). Posts: 610 08/04/2008 23:36	This is one of the common problems with fine threads that I mentioned in another post. If you don't get the wrap evenly compacted you will get light and dark bands across the wrap. About all you can do about it now is redo the bad wraps. Next time, try to lay the thread down tight to the turn before and burnish the blazes out of each wrap(without shredding the thread of course). john

Posts: 511 08/07/2008 16:14	Tom--some more info on just what you are using for the finish might help. Are you using CP and if so which one and how many coats? If not then what varnish are you using? Are you thinning it with anything and how much? Are you using a walnut oil and amber for the first coat to get transparent wraps? There are too many variables here to answer your question--Larry
