I have the pleasure of moderating a fly fishing authors forum this September 20th featuring Ted Lesson, John Gierach, Mallory Burton and Chad Hanson ( a local
Wyoming Author) I have a few questions to begin but I'm wondering what questions you might ask of these fine folks. Thanks !

I once had the pleasure of co-moderating a forum with Lefty Kreh, Stu Apte, Bud Lilly, Dave Whitlock, Leon Chandler, Paul Schullery, and mebbe one or two
others I can't remember. Anyway, the most fun question (especially Dave Whitlock's answer) was "Tell us about your very first fly fishing
experience."

1 - I think I'd like to ask those writers what their bare-bones setup would be: one rod, one reel, one line, and five flies. No fudging!
2 - Being an English teacher, I'd also like to know a little bit about their writing process from inspiration to finished manuscript. 3 - I'd also ask them their opinion about the ever-changing and highly arguable idea of "fishing ethics" - that should get them squirming just a little. (Actually, I think these writers have a very highly developed sense of fishing ethics - in many respects, that's what guides their writing.) Sounds like it will be a fun session! Dean

Fishing in the United States is a sport that is in decline. U. S. Fish and Wildlife Agency statistics show more than a 15% decline in license sales over the last 5 years alone. Fly shops are going out of business and big box outlets are barely managing to stay afloat through primarily low-margin comodity sales. What can the fly fishing industry do - specifically the professional communicators who work in print, video and lectures - to promote the responsible, sustained growth of fly fishing and attract practitioners of the sport from the "hardware" side of the industry and new faces who currently don't fish?That's my question, and I'll be mighty interested in the answers you get... I would ask them what is their preference for a fly rod when fishing a small to medium stream, and why? Bamboo, glass, or graphite?

My question ;
Given a totally freehand (cost and distance wise) for a freshwater fly fishing trip where would you choose to go from ; 1) the places that you have not fished yet and 2) the places that you have fished before |

I think I'd ask if it is as much fun now as when they each started. Why yes, or why no.

Hi boywonder,
A golden opportunity indeed! You might want to tell them that their fan base is not only confined to the USA but also extends to the far east especially Mr Gierach. Other than Japan, there is not proper fishing culture in Asia. In fact, hunting style sports is frowned upon and 'see and not touch' approach to nature is preffered eg. photography and scuba diving. My question would be: Do you think flyfishing is relevant in this world where really 'wild' nature is threatened and why is it so? I have my own answer for that but would love to learn from their wisdom how to put right man's relationship with nature. Have a great session! Arthur |

John Gierach was here this summer, only about 25 people there. I asked him what " Signs of Life " was about. Its a book mentioned in the front pages
of " Fishing Bamboo" .
He got a grin out of it and said it was a very old book of his poetry, way out of print. He said he has seen it go for more money on a single copy than he ever made off the entire print run.............
