I have a 9' 4wt. pre-fire Leonard that needs refinishing. Who is our Leonard expert? Would it be a sin to replace the guides with larger ones??

Yes it would. Get yourself a silk line, but even if you don't before replacing the guides try the rod with a thinner than usual plastic line like the Quiet
taper II or the Cortland Sylk. I have a 9 1/2 ' 6wt prefire with miniature snake guides. I use it for bass with a DT 6 Cortland 444 as I don't have a
6wt silk and I only use the rod occasionally for small-mouths during a hex hatch. The line works fine, but my right shoulder starts complaining after two hours
of casting.

I agree with OFB. Keep the small guides (should be bronze english twist). I have a pre fire Leonard 9'er that I refinished and it casts a Cortland
Sylk just fine. No problem with the small guides. Check your messages.

I am currently having a Leonard restored by Joe Ballestrieri in Wisconsin. He did one other rod (non-Leonard) for me any did a wonderful job at a very
reasonable price. He's very concerned with correctness and his repair work is top-notch. His number is 414-828-1663. Another option for fly line is the
Hook & Hackle Hi-Floater which is made for them by Cortland. I find it to have the same smaller diameter and suppleness as their Sylk at almost half the
price. I use it with some of my older rods (as well as my newer ones) with the tiny agate stripper guides and it works great.
