The reel has the external 'Strong Arm' logo for Milward but has wonderful internal markings 'VXX' to all the parts which suggest (to me) probably a Heaton made reel, nicely pierced foot also (shame about the line cuts).
Here are some pics ;

Milward 2 1/2" Brass Reel - Nice markings! |

Here is a 2 1/2" brass reel that I found lately - before I have the handle replaced (and I would be interested in the correct handle type for it) - also
the rough value of the reel and some idea of date ( I am speculating 1870 'ish but do not know brass reels).

Aren't the screws modern replacements?? Also looks like the screw holes have been reamed freehand (i.e., not round) Neat reel, but I would think this would
hurt collector value?

Ken, I think the appropriate handle would be Horn as in this J Bernard reel
(I sold this one a few months ago for about £60 if I recall correctly?) It dated between approx 1880 and 1900. (I have several more photos if of any use)

20th Century, the term Made in Britain was first introduce in 1905 I think and was only used by Milwards out of all the fishing tackle makers.

Thanks all -
Brian - I will try and locate a suitable handle - from the 'shadow' on the plate I think a thinner than yours but I can measure the 'shadow'. Stefan - do you mean it is pre 1905 (because it is marked Made in England) or post 1905 and Made in 'Britain' is a typo ? Thanks. |

Sorry yes its a type, should be Made in England, it is post 1905 or even later. I think it was the Wedgewood company who first introduced Made in England on
their pottery and was adopted by various other companies. An American Law, Taft Law I think introduced in 1921 called for all imported goods the have their
country of origin on them. This is from memory for an article I wrote over ten years ago so the dates may vary by one or two years.
On various Hardy reels you see Made in England but all with the Hardy name and logo. The only company who just put Made in England and nothing else was Milwards. |

I've seen several Heaton export alloy reels marked only Made in England.

Certainly S. Allcock Co. was engaged in the export business. I would just be surprised for only Milward to use that stamp.
while we're on the subject of cross-pond business relationships, I'll ask you a question I asked about 3 or 4 years ago. prewar Young pattern 2A sold by R&W Kerr of Montreal
any idea whether Young had a business relationship with either Shakespeare or Ingliss (Canada)? Or do you think they just liked the Shakespeare box? I asked the question of Rupe, and he had no specific knowledge. Thanks Ron Mc oh, and not trying to steal your thread Ken. The Milward sword-in-arm logo is very cool, and makes a great collectible.

Ken, I bought one a year ago that looked very much like this. It has a horn handle of a parabolic shape. I did lots of research and found that if the brass
foot is perforated then it's pre-1900. I paid $125.00 Canadian (lots of competition) and this was without markings so your sword-in-arms logo would
command more at auction and it is so historic, the roman numerals tie the pieces together and give it an early time period, very neat to own.
Thanks for posting MFRS |

Many years ago, 20 plus I think, I interveiwed the custodian of Milward Museum, which by the way has no fishing tackle. Bernard Lee has also written a history
of the company but did not cover in any real depth the rod and reel making side of the business. We did swap lots of information especially on the lure making
side and on the major events in the companies history. If alive he would be well into his 90's now.
I can with out doubt make the following statement which is 100 true. 1. Reels stamped with only MADE in ENGLAND on them were retailed or wholesaled by Milward only. 2. Reels with this stamping were retailed after 1900. 3. These reels could have been made by many various companies including Milward, Slater, Youngs, Heatons, Percy Wadhams, Dreadnought Casting Reel company. 4. We can find some obscure reels for instance I have reel stamped MADE IN ENGLAND and PERCY WADHAM SPECIALITIES but neither of them made the reel. Milwars sold it through the wholesale trade to Percy Wadhams Specialities, who retailed the reel. Colonel Milwards family owned both companies. 5. Another unique feature of Milward reels is the positioning of the on off check button, its off set rather than directly below the center of the reel foot. |

I bet the museum had a lot of this...
and of course to clarify, according to dates you provided in ATO, shortly after WWI, Percy Wadham, Slater, and Moscrop were sold to either Milward or Allcocks, and Dreadnought was out of business. thanks, I will keep looking for the connection, because Young's use of this reel box fascinates me.
