Watch out for this rod currently being sold on a well known online auction site. This rod was originally sold at Lang's Auction in April 2005 (lot 1210) as
a 1 tip rod. The rod was bought at Lang's by someone recognized for his talented rod repairs, who then put another tip to it and then resold to a known
dealer. The current seller bought the rod from this dealer. These are facts that I don't just believe to be true, but facts that I know to be true. After
buying the rod sometime last year, the current seller contacted me asking my opinion on the rod and I told him at that time exactly what I have written here
about the rod's pedigree. The seller has amended his current listing of the rod to "very much original" because someone pointed out that one of
the ferrules was different, still no mention of the replaced tip (or the cheap agatine stripper replacement). The rod is a scarce and delicate rod in it's
own right, but none the less is being grossly and knowingly misrepresented.

Bidding just dropped from $3,000 to just over $1,000. So. At least a couple bidders have fled.
The rod has multiple problems, several quite obvious. One not pointed out is that the seller notes the "invisible wraps" at the tips as "something Edwards was known to do for strength and safety." In fact Edwards rarely did so, even on his most delicate tapers. I've also been in email contact w/ the collector who noted the different male ferrule--the seller chose not to post his observation, doing so only after others made the same comment. Pat |

I'm glad that you pointed that out. At first I noticed a difference in the thread, but I figured that it was just the camra then I saw tthe slight
difference in the ferrule.
Rods that old and in such good condition just don't show up that often. People take a look and just loose it, start bidding like drunken sailors and never look back. If money were no problem I would have probably been the high bidder right now. Aaron |

It must be the season. I think this is the second Edwards rod auction I've seen in the last two days with "issues".

I used to wonder why so many sellers claimed the Edwards pedigree (particularly using phrases such as, 'hand-made by Eustis,' etc) but I've
concluded that because there were three Edwards, making rods over a period of 70 years--along with the lingering & deep confusion over the brief Winchester
association, the careless Depression era Bristol period, the short LL Bean period, then followed by the individual firms owned by Bill and Gene--most sellers
and most buyers remain completely flummoxed by the family. Who made what rods? When? Where did they live? Who worked where? If the seller is unsure, the seller
throws in, "probably made by Edwards," or "my father-in-law (who used to cast bait) says it's an Edwards," or when selling a refinished
Monty, "this is one of the finest original Edwards I've ever seen."
The brothers did the family name no favors in the 1930s when they allowed their name to be used to make a lot of trade rod junk. Eustis would never have allowed what happened at Bristol. It's easy to say that things were hard and money scarce. But Payne, Young, Gillum, etc etc continued to make rods that were excellent, while Gene & Bill pushed out a tremendous mix of... what should I call it? Stuff. Anyway, I've clearly diverged from the original point of this thread. Thanks, Dana. Brave and honest posting that may save an innocent buyer much future grief. |
