Took my heaviest rod out, a Granger Special 8642, fishing for Chum Salmon, in a river near Vancouver. More of a mental health / sanity break from school,
didn't expect to hook anything. Hooked and lost two large Chums, at least 10lbs, maybe closer to 15. All I could do was hold on as they sprinted, peeling
off a line and 100' of backing in 2 or 3 minutes, incredible jumps, etc. Wow. The Granger was bent way into the handle, and I played those fish with all
the juice the rod had. My arm cramped up, and for the first time in my life I needed a fighting butt. Wow.
Both fish threw the fly near shore, in 4' or 5' of water. My friend John was ready with my trout net, and it would have been something to watch him try and net one of those fish. I just couldn't move the fish, they wallowed there, and that was that.
Moral: A heavier rod, and a bigger net.
