Posts: 1 11/15/2008 19:26	Tags : None Hello Everyone, Just found this site this afternoon. Seems like a nice place! My Grandmother gave me a few memento's from my Grandpa. He was a great fisherman and hunter from Canada. He used winter in Florida and did some fishing there. In the collection of poles I found one that is seemingly quite interesting and I can't seem to find any info on this particular pole and am hoping someone here can lead me in the right direction of maybe finding more out about this nice pole. It is a 7 ft. one piece bamboo pole in nice condition. It has a red and white label on it with a picture of a fish. It is marked Florida Tackle Co. St. Petersburg, Fl. Barracuda. The fish depicted on the label sure doesn't look like a barracuda though. The handle is wrapped with cord and there is just one loop on the very tip. If anyone has any idea of any resources I can read or find out more about this pole it would surely be appreciated. Thanks ahead of time, Debra

I think the best way for anyone on this board to help out would be if you could take some digital photos of the rod and post them here. If you have a Photobucket account or something similar, it's very easy to do. In the meantime, I'm going to move this thread to the Appraisals & Identification board where this type of activity typically occurs. Based on the description above, the rod sounds like a saltwater big-game rod. I'll offer up that it might also be worth your time to Google "big game tackle collecting" or something similar and look for information along those lines. While this board does technically cover any classic rods, particularly bamboo, most of our members fish for salmonids and bass in freshwater. There may be some here that will be able to answer your questions or at least point you in the right direction, but you might have better luck on a specialized big game board. Posts: 487 11/17/2008 10:57	Hi Debra, Welcome to the board. Florida Fishing Tackle Co. was in business from the 20's through the 70's and "Barracuda" was the company's brand name. Florida Fishing Tackle's primary business was lure manufactury but also produced and distributed other fishing related items. They have been out of business for 35 years or so and it will be difficult to find much on this company. The company's lures hold the most interest for collectors as this was their primary production as the other offerings were pretty much accomodation items that were imported or produced by others. What you have is a med-large game version of a cane pole. Your rod is set up for a reel and was probably cord wrapped by your Grandfather to fix the reelseat, make a more suitable handle, and accomodate whatever reel he used on it.With only a tiptop guide the rod would not be a very efficient caster or fish fighter but would have been fine for heavy line set fishing. This type of rod was produced very inexpensively and allowed economy minded fisherman to buy tackle at a low price or to purchase a rod very affordably for fishing that one may not do often. Your best bet is contact Joe Yates at http://www.joeyates.com/floridalures.htm. He is the only national collector of Florida based tackle that I'm familiar with and he may be able to fill in some of the gaps and holes concerning FFT Co. and your Grandfathers rod. In addition to contacting Joe, I'd also get the contact information for Bill Stuart, who has a huge fishing tackle museum in Florida, and bass professional Bernie Schultz, who also specializes in collecting Florida tackle.
