Here is my first attempt at wrapping and finishing a bamboo rod. Thanks to OSD I had a nice blank to work with. While I was waiting for the blank to be made I
got hooked on Bamboo {thanks to this forum }and the thought of making my own bamboo rods. I made a dip tube and a drying cabinet to finish this rod and started
to accumulate the tools to start building my own rods. This rod was quite the learning experience on finishing and wrapping. Silk thread is very small and hard
to see, apparently I am half blind.
I re wrapped this blank four times, yes four. My first batch of MOW was bad and dried to a congealed mess. I did not know it was the varnish so I tried it again
Once the third warp
was done and I had new MOW and the wraps had four coats of thinned varnish on them I was excited to see how it casts and what all the hoopla over bamboo was
all about. So like a nit wit I went to the park with my freshly sanded bamboo blank and proceeded to cast for over an hour with my new and dressed silk line.
Well I really dig the the rod and the silk line is fantastic. Now back home to clean the rod and dip it in the varnish. What a disaster. Mucilin embedded in the freshly sanded bamboo from casting made the varnish turn out like a Gorilla did it with a bucket and a sponge. I then realized I may not be the brightist cat in town.
Anyway the fourth time was a charm and I have everything either here or on it's way to build them myself.
