There is a 6wt 8' Howell's rod on yabE that states casts a 5wt DT nicely. Does anyone know if Gary's rods are good for a line size down? I've
read on the forum that Jenning's rods can cast a line size up.

I'd suspect that there's few rods ever made that could not be lined up or down dt to wf depending on any number of considerations. A good caster quite
often prefers a line a bit under stated weight and a lot of makers will state there rods to be something like wf6-dt5, wf5-dt4, etc.

I've owned two Howells rods in this size. IMO, they are rated for a #6 because that's what they take best. Gary designed this particular taper for
primary use in a drift boat. It loads and shoots very well with only one back cast. It has a little more step down over the ferrule than most of his rods and,
in my experience, really likes a TT#6 line. McFlyfish and Gmflyfish have probably landed over a thousand fish on theirs, and they are still straight and tight.
I like the rod.

As stated by Booman 2, I love this model Howells. I use a Cortland Sylk DT 6 on it and can fish far and fine or closes as the conditions require. Love it.

I have had an interesting experience with this model. I own one , early serial number (41xx) , and love it. Its my go-to rod and the sweetest feeling example
of this model I have seen. They do vary a little, especially early and later versions. Mine is slightly faster than most. My friend liked it so much that he
searched for them and bought one also. I advised him to try to find a similar vintage (early 70's). He took the advice and eventually ended up finding and
purchasing one. To both our surprise, the rod he bought is really a true 5 weight. Not close to a 6 or even a 5/6. He was a little disappointed but still got
a nice rod, though more like a Spring Creek rod than the great "all-rounder" that mine is.
