My dad gave me a couple of his old bamboo rods, and now I'm a new member and hoping to get some information on one of them. I hope I don't get the
bamboo bug too bad, because it's so expensive. One of the rods is 9' 3 piece with 2 tips. Hex. It has a South Bend Bait Co. sticker on the butt and a
serial/model? number 37-F-1180-888. Purchased approximately 1945/46. All the pieces are approximately the same length 36.75 inches. Weight is approximately 6
ounces by kitchen scale. I've looked all over and can't find this number anywhere so far. I'm interested to know any information someone might have
and particularly interested to know likely line weight for the rod and what the taper might be. Also, why does it feel so heavy when casting even compared to
the other rod which is only about one ounce less, and what would be a good reel to balance. One thing I noticed compared to the other rod (which is
7'6") is that this one has a much thicker butt section. My dad also gave me my grandfather's old reel, a Shakespeare Russell no.1889. Will that
work for it?

Looks bamboo to me. Not that I have that much experience. Definitely a fly rod. And my dad, who purchased the rod new for my grandfather, says it's bamboo.
And he's reasonably knowledgeable about that sort of thing. Interesting question, why do you ask? Did I write something pretty ignorant in my description?

Most South Bends have model numbers but not serial numbers(possibly it's a Cross-South Bend).Pictures are the best way of finding out about a rod.If you
post pictures of them here I'm sure most of your questions can be easily answered.Even if the 7'6" is only 1oz. lighter than the 9'er, the
extra 1 1/2' you are waving around will make the 9' rod feel a lot heavier than the 7'6" rod.Are there any markings on the 7'6" rod?

I'll see if I can get some pictures of the rods posted. Unfortunately no markings on the 7'6". My dad refinished it a couple times and whatever
markings may have been there are gone, and he doesn't remember any details of builder or model. Purchased new at a sporting goods or similar store about
the same time as the other in Astoria, Oregon. It is a 2 piece 2 tip, but he broke one of the tips years ago and tossed it. It's surprisingly fast and
seems to work well with a 4 and likely also a 5 weight line. I'm guessing there's not much hope of identifying this one, but I know how my dad fished
it, anyway.

Don't give up hope that it won't be identified.Pictures clear and in focus of the ferrules,reelseat,winding check etc. are often all that is needed
for a positive ID.

I've done a little research and can't find anything relative to this model South Bend.
I only thought it might be fiberglass in that most South Bend rods are only marked with the Model No. dash length. Interesting. Look forward to the pictures. Bob Go Heels!!! |

I refinished a South Bend rod with the same numbers some years back, mine was a 8 1/2' 5-6 wt. It had the comficient grip and lite lock reel seat w/ a greenish plastic insert. Please post pictures of both rods. Enjoy the world of bamboo rods!! Tom |

Here are photos of the South Bend rod. Dad had the reelseat and grip replaced recently. He had the grip done to the size and shape of the original, and it is the comficient grip. Everything else is original except the wrap at the stripping guide. This is also the original case for the rod.

Here are photos of the unknown 7'6" rod. The wrappings are redone and the rod has been refinished. Everything else is original, and dad thinks he may
have tried to match the wrapping color pattern when he redid it. Green inside and red outside.The butt section is 47" The tip section is 38". Weight
is approximately 5 ounces. The reelseat color is green and looks like a plastic type of material. Tenite? The length of the grip is approximately 5 and
7/8".Purchased new around 1947. The photo does not show it well, but the width of the rod swells quite a lot as it approaches the grip, about 2 inches out
from the grip

That one is a Horrocks-Ibbotson Tonka Queen, or the trade rod equivalent. The 47 inch butt is original full length- TQs are 7' 9". The tip section is
short- from the ferrule end, it looks like. The wraps are probably a re-do- the TQ wraps I've seen have always been gold and brown.

Were some of the tips shorter than others, without being broken that is? I was told that one tip section was broken and thrown away, but that the other, this
one, had not been broken. I'll check again with the original owner (dad). If this is the original length for the tip section, if it's not short, does
that indicate it is not a Tonka Queen or Horrocks Ibbotson? Any chance then it's a Heddon Premier? I ask that because of the as is 5oz weight for this
(apparent length) 7'6" rod and the grip shape.
