I have a DT4 purchased about 6 weeks ago on a renowned auction site. It arrived quickly from China, Zhu gives excellent service. Packaging is minimal, simple
box with no label or instructions, just a very large tin of mucillin, $ 58.00 paid for a full length line. I have fished Thebault 1/2 lines for several seasons
and the Chinese line is very similar in color but somewhat stiffer than I recall the Thebaults being out of the box. I have been dressing with Thebault
dressing and it is now much more supple after around 12 applications but will need to be fished several times to really break in. The tip appears 20-30% larger
in diameter than my DT4 Thebault although I don't have a micrometer to ascertain for certain what the difference is. The belly is smaller in diameter than
the Thebault, just a completely different taper with less of a change from tip to end of taper.I have lawn cast it with a couple 4 wt. rods and it seems to
load better than the Thebault in close and does not feel overlined on longer casts, at least in my yard. The real test will be in the Spring on the water and
hopefully the line will soften as did the Thebaults after fishing several times. Overall , I am impressed and may get a DT5 before the prices go up. These
appear to be an incredible deal so far.

Dittos here.
I have received a 5 wt. and have a 4 wt. headed my way now. Mr. Zhu is very honest and communicative. I too am waiting for warmer weather to give my lines a rubdown and time on the water. But the 5 wt. casts very nicely on the lawn if that counts. I paid an average of about $60 each. Very good values if everything pans out as expected. And after all, who knows more about making things from silk than the Chinese? Regards, Flyman

I just fired off a note to him requesting his schedule for manufacturing HDG taper lines. Should be interesting to see what his response is... and I tend to
agree... the Chinese should know how to handle silk!!!

I forgot to mention that both my 4 and 5 wt lines from Zhu were dead in the middle of the AFTMA weight ranges on my electronic grn scale! Dittos on the

Go to eBay and search for Silk Fly Line and you'll find what you're looking for. Zhu says he'll have HDG's in about 3 weeks.

He also used to have a web site, but trying to go there this am did not work. I'm guessing he took the site down and is now doing all business via the
"unmentionable" auction site!

I am in the club and have a 3,4,and 5 on the way. Really excited to get them in hand. The Price can't be beat, 3 lines for less than the minimum price of
any of the other silks sell for. Only time will tell on how they work, but you guys seem happy.

I've got one as well... | #13 | ||

I purchased a 3 wt. from Mr. Zhu as well. Took about a month shipping over here. I have only put about 6 coats of the mucilin on thus far but it is coming
along. I figure about twice that and I'll begin to put it on a reel and cast it gently to break it in - should be in good shape for spring. I've
never had a silk line before and it certainly ISN'T like popping it out of the box and putting it on the reel but I think I'm going to like it a lot.
A bit of a pain breaking it in though. Now, I'm NOT saying it's better than the American-made silk lines - I've never fished one of the
newer ones so I can't compare. I do like the price though... I can rub in a LOT of mucilin to save $250!
Only time will tell if they are as durable as the other, more well-known
lines.
One question for all those of you who do use silk lines - are you supposed to wipe the mucilin OFF after each application? I usually rub the mucilin in with my fingers, working it in well, back and forth, working all the way to the end. Then I begin at the end and work through it again all the way to the end - I do this twice a day (morning and evening) and then let it sit until the next morning. Thus far I have not wiped it down after each application. The heat of my fingers and friction seem to cause it to sink in pretty well but, perhaps the rubbing with a cloth after is necessary? Pat "He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly
fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman."

flyfishingpastor - I wasn't aware that anyone in USA was making silk lines - Phoenix and thebault are made in France (maybe Phoenix in england now) and terenzio in Italy. Who is making silk lines domestically? |

jz2;
Jonathan Busse of TN. is or was making them. He's the only one that is coming to mind right now, but I THOUGHT there were a couple others but maybe not. Pat "He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly

My dt 3 arrived today...pretty fast shipping from China 2 weeks time. Now the hard part begins, but it came with a tub of Mucilin so I should be good to go...
Going to be a lot of line work this winter with those other two on the way plus several I peeled off of vintage reels. I might not be able to hold a fly
fishing rod come spring with all the work I have cut for my poor hands.

Literally, minutes before I (we) left for the Christmas holidays, my DT3, DT4, & DT5 silk lines arrived from China. Doubt if it took more than 7 or 8 days
after PayPal transfers. At first glance, they look pretty good. I don't think that there were any small loops at the end of the lines but I'll just
make small loops and wrap them with some orange dacron line backing to make the loops and built in strike indicators.
Will start to soften the lines soon and then rub in some of the Thebault line grease that I normally use on my other silk lines. By the way, since the Chinese lines come with a large tin of "Mucilin" (?) but there's no actually Mucilin logo / address / colors, I would assume that this is a Chinese-made equivelent of Mucilin. Cheers and Safe Fishing Bob |

Questions | #18 | ||
Has anyone actually fished these
lines?
Does silk usually take such extended breaking in? Is the mucilin provided on a par with the red tin mucilin? Thanks. Bob Go Heels!!! |
