Posts: 1336 11/30/2008 10:12 Admin	Tags : None Howdy Folks, Time for the yearly announcement for the annual FYAO. 2009 marks the 8th year we've been meeting up on New Years day to do a little fishing and a lot of socializing. The format remains the same this year, as it has in the past. We'll be holding our 8th Annual FYAO (Freeze Yer Arse Off) fishing day on January 1, 2009 at the Gunpowder River in upstate Maryland. It's located about halfway between Baltimore, MD and York, PA. As usual, we'll meet up for breakfast at the Bob Evans located just off I83 at the Padonia Rd exit, figure out who's fishing with who and on which stretch of the water, then head over to Backwater Anglers for those that need licenses and any last minute things, and hit the water. We usually meetup afterwards, either at one of the parking lots in the town of Hereford, or if the weather isn't that great, there's a nice pub near the town of Hereford we can all gather at. Here's the most recent stream report from the Backwater Angler's fly shop website: "The Gunpowder river is flowing at 126 Cfs, is in the mid 40's (F) and is clear. Recent reports point to excellent Winter fishing and very little pressure along the stream. Small nymphs in the #16-20 range have been most effective in riffles and flats from Falls Rd through Bunkerhill Rd. Try streamers a little further downstream to Bluemount." I wanted to drop you a note to let you know that the shop will be closed on the first. The Backwater Angler staff will miss seeing the FYAO crew and we'll be getting in a little fishing of our own. Additionally the notice will be on the front door of the shop in case we miss anyone who has not checked the site recently. If someone need a license the day of the 800 # will be the best bet. Best Regards, Theaux Le Gardeur Usually, we meet up for breakfast, then head over to Theaux's shop for last minute purchases, Gunpowder updates, and license pruchases. We won't be able to do that this year, so you'll have to pick up your licenses before hand. Theaux was kind enough to put up a link on his home page on how to do that. For you out-of-staters, it would be a good idea to head there first. The river is in pretty good shape. Stream gauge is showing approximately 100 cfs, and folks are catching fish. Water temps are holding in the mid to high 40's. If anything else comes up between now and Thursday, I'll poast as soon as I can. Mark Si vis pacem, para bellum.

Ice in the guides, frozen fingers, frozen ears, and numb toes. The apres fishing at the Pioneer Pub was rather nice though. Mark Si vis pacem, para bellum.

Yeah Howard I really wanted to attend.In fact I had an offer to ride down with fellow rodmaker Doug Alexander.I actually entertained the idea of traveling 100 miles just to meet up for breakfast,sit in the truck while everyone fished and then enjoy the after gathering at the Pioneer Pub.When I got up @ 5:30 it was 18* with a windchill in the single digits here in Clear Spring so I squelched that idea immediately.However,knowing me,I would have tried to fish for at least a short time and that would have been led to problems.Just going out to pick up the morning paper was an ordeal as air that cold feels like a 1,000 shards of glass ripping my lungs.My Dr. told me in no uncertain terms that I have to start living within the limitations brought on by the condition of my lungs or face the consequences.I don't like it but figured it was time to start listening to him.I agree with Bob about having a get together in the Spring/earlySummer when the weather is more tolerable and the fish more cooperative.Maybe we can make that happen this year. Posts: 28 01/04/2009 21:49	I had the pleasure of attending my first FYAO get together and although the score was fish 1, fishermen 0, I had a great time and plan on attending again next year. While the very cold air and water tempertures put a dampner on the catching the fishing was great as I got to meet a great bunch of guys from Maryland and West Virginia who took the time with great enthusiasm to show me some new water on a pretty little river in a beautiful part of East Coast trout country. I would like to thank Mark for organizing the event as well as everyone I met that day. It was truly enjoyable sharing the day with a great bunch of guys who share a common interest in fly fishing and bamboo rods. Gentlemen, thank you for the pleasure of your company.
