Posts: 471 12/03/2008 20:21	Tags : None Well, it looks like I'm going to have major reconstructive surgery on my casting shoulder Dec. 22. This was a hard decision because my other great outdoor love is upland bird hunting with my English Setters, and this date cuts a full four weeks off my season. However, I needed to balance that with recovery time (6 months +) which will seriously shorten my fishing season, as well. I guess giving up all the spring hathces and the last month of bird season is the best compromise that could be reached. Plus, my oldest daughter will be home the first two weeks after surgery to take care of me, so the *"Bah, humbug!"* of being rather incapacitated (and mumbly on Percoset) at Christmas time will be somewhat offset by having a live-in nurse of sorts. Does anybody have ideas for ways I can pass the time while on the mend? Anything a right-handed guy can do for a few months with just his left hand (keep it clean!!! )? The worst of all this is I will probably receive a new rod or two during this time that I won't even be able to cast. That will be nearly unbearable!

Posts: 458 12/03/2008 20:31	Mark, Sorry to hear that, but it sounds like it has to be done. We do a lot of shoulder surgeries at our facilities. I can't give you any suggestions on how to pass time, but at least you will not be missing out on any fishing. And just think how much better your arm will feel next season.

Posts: 259 12/03/2008 20:39	I've had significant Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery (with internal appliances) twice this year on my casting Arm shoulder so I can relate to what you are anticipating. The first surgery was in the Spring; it was successful but I fell and landed on it while hiking 6weeks after the surgery. The second time around has taken a lot longer to heal ,,, still healing 12weeks after the 2nd surgery. Here are two Absolutes I can suggest ... 1.) you will need a recliner Chair to sleep in for at least the first 2-3 weeks ... you will not be able to sleep on your back 2.) do the "PT" like it was a new religion ... do NOT miss a single session and do the work at home on the in-between days. If your Insurance Co. balks about paying for any of it, talk with your PT Team, they have "Codes" that can help smooth out some of that resistance And, tie flys once you are comfortabel sitting at the Bench ... won't be for several weeks but eventually you'll find it really helps pass the time, and of course, keyboarding on-line here really helps. Posts: 3766 12/03/2008 20:43 Moderator	Tie lots of flies... I go under the knife for the left knee on the 15th. So I won't be able to wade for about 3 months. I plan on tying until my eyes cross. Posts: 472 12/03/2008 20:46	Thanks, Ken. That all really helps. I've already had one rotator cuff repair with acromioplasty, so I kinda know the drill. This set of procedures (three in all, done at the same time) will be far more extensive. My health insurance coverage is excellent, so I'll be sure and take your PT advice to heart. Tying flies is something I don't normally do (another injury), but perhaps I should take it up. Maybe just soft hackles...

As was previously posted: learn to cast with your weak hand! Those are skills that I wish that I have spent more time developing and all of the great fly fishers do very well. Any interest in Spey casting? Even with dominant shoulder surgery you can take up Spey casting. You have great instructors in your area and I have a long green stick that I can send your way. This is not such a bad thing...here are two activities all your friends on the board will help with..... #1...before surgery make a list (start with that Monty Montana fella) and type mailing address labels with name & address of all forum members. after surgery with your left hand...apply above address labels to packages of all your rods and guns..... Mail said packages to (me first) and then to all your other friends and we will keep the mojo flowing and the hinges greased while you are on mend . Really will we make this sacrifice just because we (collectively) are nice guys. #2... using said left hand again ...from time to time check the forum photos section for proof we are using your rods and guns to your liking. We will even write detailed descriptions of how your rods and guns perform...so you may compare YOUR choice to others, kind of like a check and balances system to see if your choices have been best for you. That way when you return to full usable health, you will know if you need to buy more rods and guns without all the work (we the forum brothers) will do just for you. No need to thank us ...I'm sure you would do the same if one of us were in your shoes. Last learn how to take the cork out of the Tequila bottle left handed. Best to your daughter she is going to need it....after putting up with a whining crying un-happy adult fly-fishing bed ridden father. Posts: 118 12/03/2008 21:54 Moderator	Mark - Sorry to hear about the operation, but I'm sure you're thinking long-term: Few months of missed fishing, in exchange for a lifetime of health casting. The physio is critical. I dated a physio for a year (she treated me, shoulder, and we hit it off - she was cute, and well....), and I heard all sorts of stories of people that didn't do the exercises, which led to lifelong partially healed joints. Fly-tying could be good, but if it was me I'd catch up on reading, and get outside walking. Good luck! I'll email some pics from the Island this month. Mark

Posts: 12 12/03/2008 23:10	Mark,sorry to hear about your surgery and wishing you a speedy recovery for the spingtime hatches. I do know how you feel. About 3 years ago I broke my right hand along with some bones in my wrist twice within one year. Needless to say I am right-handed. It was a blessing in disguise as I had a choice of either to stop fishing or learn to cast left-handed. Like anything else, learning to cast left-handed was hard at first, but the more I practiced the better I became at doing it. Give your shoulder some time to heal and then give it a try. I will actually still cast left-handed in certain situations on a stream that call for an easier presentation left-handed. My other advice is to catch up on some good books and treat yourself to some nice and real expensive scotch or whiskey. Put your Christmas wish list in early and get well soon. Bob

Posts: 1151 12/04/2008 04:30	Hi Mark, I sorry to hear you will be going down this road. I've had a significant shoulder Repair Surgery. It was 20 years ago and I hope you heal fast. My recovery included lots of Left Hand lawn casting. It came in very handy for me. When I started to fish right handed again after a few hours my shoulder would start to ache and I could switch hands and rest my shoulder for a few hours and still fish. I think the casting helped a great deal in regaining my strength and well as forcing me to let the rod cast the line. Being able to cast Left can come in handy from time to time. One heck of a way to get time off for Christmas. Wishing you well. Alan
