For me, it is a link to the past with all of the advantages of the research of our modern builders. And it gives the buyer the chance to put his/her own
touches while working with builder. Try to get a custom grip on a Sage or Scott.

They are just much better suited to the way I cast, and fish. Also as a added bonus I am using something that someone has put several hours of their life into in order to make a very useable piece of art. Plus they are just plain COOL!!!!! |

Graphite is a trumpet. It's hard-edged, bright and sharp . Cane is a violin. It's warm and full and it has an almost human voice. Both instruments
can make beautiful music, but I prefer the violin.

I fish my cane rods because it's fun. Sure, I like that they are functional and beautiful, and personally I really enjoy learning about their histories,
but the key is the enjoyment. If it's not fun, it's not fishing. I would fish cane if everyone else was doing it, and I would fish cane if no one else
was doing it. And to anyone who likes fishing graphite, I say, "The trout don't care what they're caught on." Graphite, fiberglass, bamboo -
it makes no difference to the fish. It only makes a difference to the fisherman, and if he or she is happy, then life is good.
Quashnet's Paul H. Young Rod Database has photos and descriptions of over
390 PHY Co. rods, plus catalogs, accessories, etc. Thank you to all
who continue to send me PHY rod photos and info.

Gentlemen use cane.... barbarians use plastic.
But I don't really have an opinion.

Plastic lives too fast
and dies young; Bamboo ages with graceful beauty.
I'm more successful at keeping my mind open than my mouth shut.

I love the way they look, feel, and I appreciate the craftsmenship that went into building them. Also, I think more was thought/experiment was put into their
tapers that had more to do with fishing rather that just making the rod cast as far as possible.

I´d like to turn the question the other way around, asking the graphite guys: Why don´t you fish a bamboo rod?....
....
Thanks, // Mats |

Bamboo hold's magic within it's composition. Graphite is cold, sterile and lifeless, much like mars....

Well Bob, you asked:
My question is this, how do you respond to this question of "why do you fish bamboo"? My post tells what I mostly say, as the question often is confrontational. Not always, but very often. If it´s not, they get to try my rod instead. If they don´t like it, I´m perfectly fine with that. // Mats |

Nothing really has changed for me - but Skues probably said it with more finesse than I can muster ;
"I think the chief part of the ecstasy of fishing with the fly is to be found in the qualities of the fly rod, and if I am right in this, the more exquisite the rod the keener and more perfect the pleasure to be derived from the sport, a strong argument in favour of perfection in one's weapon for the particular game in hand. It may be, indeed it is, better to fish with any old rod than not to fish, but to fish with the most perfect of gear raises the satisfaction to the sublime - a thing of which those who have never handled a really perfect weapon can have no conception." |

Another quote which speaks better than I do, . . . :-
"How can one find adequate words to describe the sweet feel of a rod that makes casting an esthetic delight, yet which adds little to one's ability to catch fish?" from "The Philosophical Fisherman" by Harold Blaisdell |
