Unusual handle |

I have a Lee Wulff Ultimate. The handle is very unusual as it is fixed. I have seen quite a few reels, but they all have handles that turn as you wind. I have
been thinking my reel is not original. I've studied the pictures of Turtledoc's 2009 calendar for february. The handle itself seems identical, but the
picture does not reveal if it is fixed or turning. Maybe some of the members know? Are there other reels with non-turning handles?

RustyRat, PM sent. I know of another gentleman that has the same problem with his LWU. The handle is meant to turn but due to its design, the handle or knob tends
to become fixed. Give the knob a good oiling at the screw head and let it sit. Place some oil at the knob's base as well. If it remains fixed, loosen
the screw very, very slightly but make sure the driver head fits the slot perfectly (or snugly) so you don't distort the metal. If this does not work, you
may want to send your reel to Bill Archuleta.

sounds like the plastic has swollen.
The 3rd model Heddon Imperial is really prone to this. Since you can take this one apart easily, take it apart and press the handle from its spindle. Take the closest size drill bit, and dress the inside by hand with the bit. When it spins freely on the spindle, oil the spindle and reassemble.

i think that this is the same thing that happens to some of the reels i end up buying , the handle don't spin , i also beleave the handle gets swollen from
over time like bulldog says
i have a small dremel tool and put the little round sander on and pass it back and forth through the handle , fixes them all the time , i add a small drop of oil after

Drew,
I've R&R'd 3 of them. Not the most subtle of repairs. I just drill out the rivet, taper myself a nice foot on the inside of the spool, open up the handle until it's free on the spindle, then cast the spindle back in with JB Weld. It functions like a new reel. These were all reels that had varying "field modifications", so I'm taking a reel that's not pristine, anyway, and making it function. Not as nice as putting in a new rivet, but it's a very small repair and lasts - I fished this for a couple of years before I sold it (with full disclosure).
On this one, the spool had been painted over the dried grease, so I also painted the spool, and was happy with the result
I did one like this for a friend very recently, and he was delighted. On his, the rivet had been so splayed the handle wobbled badly, and of course, it was the rivet that was spinning, not the handle knob. The repair worked very nicely.

I had a Bauer do this! | #7 | ||
|
I had a Bauer M1 that had a handle (that wooden laminate style) where I figured out that the ID of the hole hadn't shrunk as in the material swelling.
Instead my trouble was with the handle getting longer/tighter lengthwise..???.
Yah, I know, go figure. Although it had a flat head screw that "should've come loose I fixed the problem easily by inserting a small strip of #220 grit sandpaper at the rear of the wooden handle and spinning the handle against it's "mounting plate" or whatever that doo-hicky is called! It sanded the length down appreciably so I had no more troubles. Jeremy. |

I have a Dingley with the same problem. Removing the handle from the reel and trying to loosen the spindle doesn't seem to have much effect. Oiling both
ends & trying to loosen the spindle is difficult (it turns using a screw driver, but only w/ effort). Should I try to tap it out from the screw end toward
the top?
The most common advice seems to be "send to Bill A." |

pcg wrote:Pat, I've had exactly the same problem. Solution: Drilled a hole in a 2" thick piece of wood the same as the O D of the handle, with a metal drill bit, about 3/4" deep. Drilled smaller hole, same dia as screw head, from centre of first hole through rest of timber. Soak handle in thin oil overnight, pop into hole, use thin piece of wood over threads and tap gently (as reqd )
Afterwards I gently cleaned the inside of the hole with a fine round file, just a build up of black dust. Worked for me. (send it to me if you want?) Brian

Brian,
Thanks & great advice. I did write Bill, & he wrote back this morning that he'd have to reattach the handle as per Hardy reels--he doesn't have the right "riveting tools to mimic the Dingley." So your solution preserves the original integrity. The downside to your solution is that tapping on the threads could mar the threads on the Dingley spindle (you can probably detect my lack of confidence). So... I'll give it a try (that is, a "gentle" try). Nothing ventured, nothing gained. If all else fails, I suppose I could always send it back to the Dingley shop in Alnwick. Does anyone have their current address? :-) Pat |

Here's Bill's exact paragraph (I had also asked him if he could replace the black ebonite with bone):
"I can remove the handle and make a new spindle that will allow the original handle to spin (I don't have any bone.) However, I can't attach it the way Dingley did; it will be more like a Hardy (I don't have the riviting tools to mimick the Dingley.)" Pat |

Pat, send your Dingley to me and it will have the original handle, R&R'd, in original condition, and working perfectly. It doesn't need a new
spindle, it just needs the swollen handle gentley reamed.
Michael, please step up and comment on the handle I R&R'd on the Dingley I converted for you.

you have a very easy fix , i remove the handle first , then i unscrew it from the tub , so now all you have left is the black handle on the spindle , the black handle will not turn as it has swelled , i then take a small socket that the end of the handle will not fit in but will allow you to tap out the spindle , take a rubber mallet and tap on the spindle and it will just pop out , i then take a dremel with a round tip and slide it up inside the handle and just remove a bit from the handle innards , clean the spindle good and put the handle back on and it should turn very nice and easy , save yourself some money as it's a 5 min easy fix , i'd say on most older reels they swell over time and i like mine to turn freely so i do any that is not perfect ,
Richard
