Do you add a little oil down the brake tension knob? -- I see two outlets near the brake shoes.
Thanks for any info/advice.

J Peek 3" Centabrake No 1 |

A recent acquisiton -- a 3" diameter J Peek marked Centabrake No 1. After seeing these in the archives and Phil W's book I was eager to handle one.
This one has a repair to the frame which I think adds a little character. I presume Heaton made. I really appreciate the workmanship -- especially the spring
retaining brass.

I can't answer your question about oiling the brake tension knob, but what a gorgeous little reel you have there. The innards are exquisite in design! I
agree with you that the repair adds character too. Just a nice looking little reel.
Like you, I'm looking forward to learning more about it from the others on this board too. Greg |

The detailing of the innards of that reel are stunning.........obviously made by someone that cared about their work.....I can't add anymore other than I
too presume this to be from the R. Heaton stable.....thanks for sharing the photos

I love this style of reel!
Here are a couple of others in the centrebrake style. The first Heaton has the same click setup as yours with a slightly different handle detail.
Another version with the A&NCS retailer and Reuben Heaton maker marks
If you've heard this story before, don't stop me, because I'd like to hear it
again.

This looks like the one Allcock and Co. Ltd had for sale from 1921-24 no. 7978. As you can see there is a hint of black left, this reel originally had a black
finish, except for the rim. It is described in Turners book, it is well made for sure. Actually, I see Bill Charles has the perfect Allcock example, very
nice. I recently was researching this reel as I nearly bought one and got some sound advise first, but like I said before this reel is very well made.

Thank you everyone for the comments.
Bill, gorgeous reels -- I can add that my reel also has B2072 engraved on the frame next to the foot. Dennis |

The 3 1/2 inch I was contemplatiog on purchasing had the same patent # on the frame at that location, The example the Allcock Catalogue has is exactly what
Bill has in his first photo, right down to the patent numbers. The spindle is made of phospor (hard) bronze and the shoes of steel so oil would be a nice
lubricant, high-end reel grease if you got it is what I would use long-term outside of the spindle and I would add oil down the brake spindle knob as any
lubricant will eventually end up there via the spindle holes. This is, personally, what I would do for reel lumrication and with this metal, you can't go
wrong.

MFRS Thank you for the additional details -- perhaps I will use Quantum hot sauce grease which Bulldog recommends in the clean/lube sticky.

Here's an early 1920s version by Master Wm. Dingley, his patented "Struan"...

Here's another one, with the same handle fitting as Bill's, but with no patent numbers (or any other marking, except for a serial number). It's a
small 3 1/4" (or a large 3 1/8").
I've got another Heaton centabrake with a similar brake mechanism to the Dingley "Struan". This one's a 3 1/2".
Here they are together.
Merry Christmas to all. Regards, Doc |
