Smelly rods and rod bags |
Lead | ||
|
I own an Orvis MCL Midge/Nymph that has a rather awful smell (I think formaldehyde) to the rod bag, as well as the rod itself. I have several other Orvis
bamboo rods and the smell is not evident. Any others of you have a similar experience? Washing the bag doesn't get rid of the odor.

I have a couple of Heddons that put out a pretty foul smell when I open the tubes. I figured it was the bags, and since I didn't want to damage them by
washing them, I just live with it. It's not noticeable after a few minutes.

Hang the bag in the garage and get a new bag to use day to day. If you sell in 10 years the orig. bag may be ready to go.

Wash the bag in Woolite, gentle cycle. Air dry.

Smelly Heddons | #5 | ||

teter,
I am almost completely convinced It is caused by Heddon's use of turpentine as I did a 7.5 3/2 and finished it with varnish thinned with turp and made it smell just like a Heddon. still does years later. And it may be getting stronger could be a hint to
fish it more?

Wax the rod with Town Talk Orange Wax, then it will smell like oranges!

Retrotrout Would suggest that you cover the smelly bag with lots baking soda for a few days letting it absorb the odors. Then soak the bag in a warm water / baking
soda solution to get the remaining powder from the bag; rinse in clean warm water; squeeze out the excess water; then let it drip dry in a warm (not hot) area.
You might want to put a little weight on the bottom of the bag (a binder clip with a few lead sinkers ..... or LOTS of beads !) to get some of the wrinkles
from the bag.

I have a number of rods where the bag smelled strongly of tobacco smoke. Really suprised me how strong the smell could be. Hand wash carefully. I have had no
problem gently ironing the bags after they dry.

This is the smell of formaldehyde. Not varnish, not tobacco, not fish slime. And it's the only Orvis bamboo rod I own that the bag smells that way.
I've washed it three times, and it still smells. Does it have something to do with the impregnation process?

Yes, it has everything to do with the impregnation process, unlike the odor I noticed in my Heddon bags and tubes.
*This information has not been vetted by anyone who actually knows anything about chemistry, Bakelite, or smells. Well, O.K., maybe I know about smells.

FYI for all of older board members - new medical study a sure sign of Alzheimer's is not being able to smell - lemons, natural gas, bananas, or formaldahyde (kidding). Look what happened to Bozeman Montana when someone could not smell natural gas. Gregg |

Retrotrout, your rod was previously owned by an undertaker.
All kidding
aside, it might be worth an inquiry to your local funeral parlor as I'm sure they know how to get rid of that odor!

I cannot tolerate the smell of mildew.
In fact, my boss uses my nose to identify which rooms in the office need the carpet treated - and I'm even a cigar smoker - just hypersensitive to mildew. I really don't understand how people can search out old leather reel cases. Make mine new and mildew-free, please.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.
