ATH Traun Counterbalance |
Lead | ||

I have seen photos of the Traun both with and without a counterbalance. I just purchased one without the balance and frankly, I wish it had one. Was the
counterbalance optional on the Traun? Thanks for any info.

I had a traun - with a spare spool, the spare had the counterbalance. it was an option that I purchased and installed, iirc.

It might be more correctly stated that the era of the two models was different. I believe the very early ones did not have a counterbalance, and due to some
grumbling by owners Ari added one later on. I'm sure the counterbalances were available for those who wanted to upgrade their early reel that did not have
one. I think that the F1, or Traun, was the only size of the F series that ever came without one. Since this all happened before I became an ATH dealer in
1992, it's possible I have some facts wrong due a poor recollection of what I was told many years ago. Anyone else have a better memory of how and why this
happened?

ATH Traun | #3 | ||

My Traun #3007 came without a spool counterbalance. In my experience fishing it for many years, I've not experienced any "inertia wobble" on
stripping and/or line pay out with a running fish.
Since the spool is only 2 1/4" in diameter, I doubt if the c/b would be as necessary on the Traun as it is on larger diameter ATH reels where they came as "standard" equipment. Regards, Flyman

I did some additional research. I cannot find a photo of a Holland era F1 that has a counterbalance. The serial number 3007 would be one of the last that was
done so that shoots my previous theory. That is unless it was added later. I don't ever recall counterbalances being available for purchase through the
dealers. I've also searched for photos of an F1 from the Denmark era and haven't found one that shows the spool side. I'm not sure if
counterbalances were added by the new Fiskar team or not.

Until recently I had in my posession a early Danish silvercoloured F1 without the counterbalance. I've also had a later black/gold one with the balance,
but then they had altered the spool so the CB was fastened with a screw, not glued like the Dutch and early Danish ones.

Nice photos, thanks. I wish mine had the CB. I am getting a fair amount of wobble while stripping line. No big deal, but.....
