I joined this forum today and within one hour had my hopes dashed, my expectations questioned, my knowledge based raised, and my ego tested. I joined this forum wnting to learn about the history of a fly rod given to me by my brother in law. It was his father's (who passed away before I ever met him). It is a bamboo fly rod, and much like the one my father cherished and left to me, it is of Japanese origin, and perhaps common as dirt and about as worthless to any but me. I read the disclaimer about appraisals and ID's, so I dare not request information about the rod maker or the rod. That is a shame. But I understand...mostly.
That said, I perused many threads for about an hour or so and realize that many of you are very experienced and knowledgeable on this topic. I hope to learn an lot and share a little now and then, when I can contribute. I enjoy reading these threads and it is obvious to me that this is both a severe pleasure and passion to most. I expect I will enjoy lurking through the threads and learning quite a bit as I do.
I am going to a bamboo fly rod making class this spring to build one of my own, and I enjoy mountain stream fishing, big river fishing, and mountain lake fishing here in Arizona. I am currently a plastic (graphite) rod fisherman who wants to learn and experience what I read in "Casting a Spell." I am into the nostalgia of bamboo as well, and hope to collect some bamboo & fiberglass rods and accoutrements.
Meanwhile, this working class lad will continue to search the heritage of two rods (in a few million) that mean the world to me.
Good day and tight lines, one and all.

Either way, enjoy the forum.
