Maxwell Era Leonard |

I have a Maxwell era Leonard Catskill 37-4 with serial number 80200. That shouldd mean that it was the 200th rod made in 1980. Since Tom Maxwell left Leonard
in January of 1981, was this rod actually made during his tenure at Leonard?
Thanks |

vetfly is asking "was the rod actually made during his [Maxwell's] tenure at Leoard" so I agree with T120. Yes, it was. To tell whether Maxwell
lettered the rod, CtKenC is right in that you need to see it.

You will find many an answer to this. You will see those early transition rods serial numbered in the 3000's as those were the blanks of Simroe when
Maxwell took over. The blank was a Simroe, but the fittings were pure Maxwell. The early Maxwell rods, usually lettered in his script, only had a newly
reset serial number in addition to the model number (38DF-4, 49x). I have personally handled them starting in the 100's, so I cannot tell you if they
began lower from pure recollection tonight. Certainly, those with the engineering draftsman script serialized rods, starting in the year group 80 (80xx) were
obviously Tom's writing (eg, 49-5, 809x). The penmanship of your rod could tell you. Looking at some photos on the internet may help. Having taken
engineering drawing in the late 70's, I was immediately able to recognize a difference in the serial number script of a tip on an early Maxwell 38 DF-4,
that I briefly owned about 7 years ago due to a very subtle difference in the writing. I have subsequently seen that on other rods from then, where everything
else (wrap color, cane color, aging of the tip and hardware) looked the same. Of course the question was then, what do we have here? A forged tip? replacement
tip? a tip lettered when the said individual was tired or otherwise not 100%, or how about teaching someone else to letter the rod tip with the challege of
mastering the script style right along side Tom. I was not there and do not know. Maye some others who were more closely linked could tell you. Living only
about 12 miles away back then, there was neither the time nor the money to acquire a Maxwell rod. Maybe this year for me?

1977, as I recall. Don't know the month.
