Well, they say that their forging process makes them 30% stronger, so think of the 30% increase as paying for the extra strength.
Anyway, hook models come and go. Always have, always will. In the books, the Dettes, the Darbees, Rube Cross even Gordon himself complained about not being able to get the hooks they wanted, so they found alternatives. Commercial tyers have the problem of taking less profit per fly (out of the little already there) or increasing the cost. Those of us that tie for personal use, or to keep us out of the cathouses, well, does the hook itself really represent a huge cost in a single fly? I'm talking about normal trout sized flies, not Salmon flies or Stevens style streamers. How much do we spend on a dry fly cape or saddle? And then balk at the cost of hooks? Find the hooks you want in the sizes you want and buy in lots of 1K.
