Beans Double L |
Lead | ||
|
Picked up a Beans rod last year and have been trying to attach a value to it. Have searched this forum often and my research here and elsewhere leads me to
believe it is an Edwards rod. It is 9 ft, casts a 6 wgt. 3 sections with spare tip. All it says is Beans Double L, that's it. It is in very good
condition, the guides are a little rough, wraps are very good. Has the original sock and Beans soft leather rod case. I hope someone can help place a value
on this rod. Very little info available. Thanks

Edwards Rod | #3 | ||

Mike,
The Beans Double L is indeed an Edwards made rod cica 1930's. Very nice aquisition. Values are hard to assign these days, but I will hazard a guess around $200 $50. Ed |

Very late 1930s ('37-40). It's a classic Gene Edwards-made rod. It's trade quality although the tapers are nice dry fly action. I'd place value
at $400-500, depending on condition. If it's in really fine condition, add $100. But $250 is way too low.

Looking at the pics, I wouldn't think this rod could be rated any higher than in good condition.
What value then? bobbyg Go Heels!!! |

Agreed. I was looking at the photos on a cell phone. Big screen they're a bit different.
Value? $400, given the case & that all sections are the same length, seems fair. I've cast two of these & they're equivalent in action & taper to the F-12s+. Nice cane, great tapers, low end components, typical mid-Depression reelseat. And this one looks well used, though in good condition. Pick it up for $400 & it's a steal for a Gene Edwards rod. If the tips are different lengths, subtract $150. But that's IMHO solely (& what I'd pay if in the market for one). |

Thanks for the responses. The rod fishes well, the only thing I don't care for is the 9 foot length and short grip make it tip heavy. Inside the case the
owner marked "AC" and "Mt. Shasta". Northern California rod, and yes I would say well used but also well cared for. So it sounds like if
I was to sell it I should ask $350 to $400? I have several 6 wghts.

Mike,
You might want to do a back search on eB** for say the last four months. I remember another LL selling recently. I didn't record the final price, but that might serve as a minor benchmark. Trade rods that the Edwards boys made have slipped slightly in pricing, while EW Edwards rods have jumped in value, perhaps because of tremendous scarcity. Going back beyond 6 months on prices for common rods becomes somewhat meaningless in this economy... |

My solution for tip heavy rods is to put lead core line under the backing so that the rod with the reel will balance in your hand.
