Posts: 2281 01/13/2009 14:53 Moderator	Tags : None I am a complete novice when it comes to knowing anything about classic flies or classic fly patterns for that matter, but thought I'd share a photo of an unnecessary, but very appreciated thank you gift that showed up in the mail yesterday. Last fall I had been contacted by Graydon Hilyard who had seen one of the Bogdan reel prints I'd done when he was visiting the Bogdans. He asked if it would be possible for him to get a copy.......let's see...the author of "Bogdan" is asking for a copy of a print I made.....and I'm a Bogdan nut.......well, that was an easy "Yes" answer to give....of course I'd like it if Mr. Hilyard wanted a print. He'd asked if he could give me anything for the print and I explained that they were not for sale and he owed me nothing. I knew that his son was a tier of classic salmon streamers and I mentioned that if he wanted to do anything for me in turn for the print, I'd enjoy a fly or two from his son. The photo below is of two streamers that he sent me that I think are just beautiful. Note that I have no idea if I should have adjusted the feathers for the photo....so if things look out of place it's my fault and not the tier's. If anyone can provide additional information on Hilyard flies and advice on how best to display these on the card it would be appreciated. Displaying feather wing streamers, especially Rangeley style streamers with their long wings, requires different treatment than what's appropriate for flies with a more 3 dimentional profile. Without support for the wings in the display, the wings (no matter how well tied) will eventually sag. It's ugly when it happens. Here's what I did some 10 years ago with a Mike Martinek tied Carrie Stevens pattern. Not the hint of a sag so far. The apparent curve in the wing and fly's profile is as it was when I received it from Mike. As you can see, I simply mounted the fly in a flat frame with a single matt. The flat mounting with a single matt places just enough pressure on the fly to keep the wing in place. The fly is fastened to the backing with mono loops at the eye and hook bend. The cards with your flies are a big plus; my fly wasn't attached to Mike's card so I mounted his card on the back. In your case, I'd mount the flies on the cards in the same position they came to you. Given that the wings got mussed up in the handling/shipping process, I would neaten them with a dubbing needle or similar prior to placing in the frame. Other than that, do nothing to the flies.
