My Cascapedia 2-3-4 arrived Monday, and my inspection was as yours but the inside was clean of shards and well lubed. I'd asked that it be set to RHW, but of course it was LHW on arrival, so I had to inspect the innards. I am absolutely delighted. The weight is perfect when paired with my new 8' HB from AJ. I'm just hating the fact that it'll be another 4 months before it sees water, Interestingly, one of the only reviews I saw on the reel before purchasing said it was "loud." Compared to all my other Hardys (Perfects, Lightweights, Marquis, St. John), this one is a purring pussycat. EP

What do you guys think of the capacity of the 2/3/4? Can you get whole DT-4 on it with a few feet of backing? I don't trust specs generally so just curious what your experience is.....? I'll also second Eric's opinion on the click.......very soft and sweet, not at all loud! The 2/3/4 is supposed to weigh 6 oz.? and I guess it does, but it doesn't feel overly heavy to me. A question for those in the know about this reel......the red drag indents on mine almost complete a full circle, in lieu of the 180 degree indent pattern as shown on Harrises site. I'm going to use it with one of the new Hardy glass rods. I'm pretty sure it could hold a full DT4 line and some backing.

The pound v.s dollar/euro exchange rate was wildly varying from day to day the last few weeks. Just one day after I ordered mine, it would've cost me 17 euros more.

Posts: 75 01/18/2009 13:07	My 5/6/7 arrived last week and I was very pleased with the reel. My intention is to use it with an 8 1/2' FE Thomas Streamer with a 7wt and I think it will serve just fine. Without line it balances right at the winding check. I liked it so well I ordered the 2/3/4 yesterday at a total billing of $267. This one is intended for an 8' Bill Taylor HB 3wt. I'll see how it fits, but in my opinion they are nice reels at these prices regardless of their point of orgin. Alan

Posts: 160 01/18/2009 15:53	I am delighted with mine. It arrived clean as a whistle inside and out. No real reason to do anything to it other than line it. It sounds good empty. It will sound very sweet lined. However, a coating of Boeshield does sound like a good idea for protection plus it gives me a good reason to fiddle with it some more. Has anyone removed the round center plate that contains the posts for the spring and pawl mechanism? Is that round plate aluminum or some other material? It did not sound quite right for aluminum when I tapped it. TC

Thanks, good luck with the reels...... More than a "few feet." I put a DT4 SA Trout taper on mine, and my guess is I've got about 20-30 yards of backing (20# Micron) behind it. I filled it with backing to the point where the spool had a secondary, internal "rim" before putting on the fly line. With that much backing and the DT4, I've got a shade over 1/16" of spool showing, and the line clears the pillars by about 3/16". EP Last Edited By: Eric Peper 01/19/2009 11:51. Edited 1 time.

Yes, and on the inside of the back plate there is a round, slightly raised portion approx 1 3/4" in diameter on the 2/3/4. On the raised part are mounted the posts that hold the springs and pawls as well as the sliding plate. There are also three screws. It makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint if this plate holding the drag mechanism were modular and held in place by the three screws. The round part has a different finish. It has the look and feel and sound of a plastic. I am reluctant to explore further by removing the three screws. Wondering if anyone else has done it. It will not change my opinion of the price/value but I am curious. TC

Is this indicative of the Korean constructed reel versus the English version? bobbyg Just a guess, but I suspect the 180 pattern is for the clutch drag models (The 10/11 is shown on Harris' site.), and the almost-360 pattern is used on the spring & pawl models. On that same note, I think it would have been nice if the dots had been graduated in size with the smaller ones indicating the lighter settings. I also wish they'd been done in white like the rest of the markings or even without any color at all . . . just my conservative taste, I guess. Posts: 2291 01/19/2009 14:44 Moderator	I must admit to sharing reelmaker's sentiment about the new Cascapedia compared to the reels having the old nostalgia of the "Hardy Bros of Alnwick", but I am also a realist and can't disparage anyone that thinks a Hardy Cascapedia for under $300, is like.....well.... Christmas in July, regardless of where or how it is made. These new reels are likely very well made and there may be no noticeable difference between a modern Hardy made in Alnwick and a modern Hardy made in Korea. I guess for me, the "how it is made" means more than the "who made it" or the "where it's made". My current collecting interest is in hand made reels, and I know that there is no way to make a reel by hand for $300 anywhere in the world....it's just not possible.... I just hope that in 20 or so years, when my kids are old enough to start thinking seriously about what their preferences are in fly tackle, that there are still some cottage makers around doing things by hand for them to consider purchasing from. I'm very fortunate to own the hand made reels that I do, and I think it would be a shame if there were no more hand makers of reels for the next generation to marvel at. With that said, I need to do my part supporting the new/next generation of cottage makers and contact my somewhat "Local Maker" to order a new Brusky, even if it may cost twice that of a new Cascapedia. The days of the off shore reels made to price points that keep the items selling and the companies doors open are here to stay, but I hope these "great prices" don't end up costing this hobby future reel options from small production shops... I fished the reel yesterday, and manhandled a 26" rainbow with it - it performed flawlessly. No one is being bamboozled - everyone knows from whence it came - it had a sticker that said made in Korea. This in no way impacts cottage reel makers. People who want handmade art will spend their money where they choose. People who want to bench make reels will continue to do so with or without a market, because they choose to. The reality is that Hardy as a company could not possibly built the handmade Cascapedia from 70 years ago, employ enough artisans and cover their benefits, marketing and overhead, and still find a market for the reel. This reel is a distinctly different choice from a benchmade reel. It's also a distinctly different choice from all those reels that look like the wheels that keep spinning after the SUV stops. Posts: 981 01/19/2009 16:11	i have been reading and checking this topic out each day and it's a good one , funny what a few months that passes make , i sure remember the bitching on this reel page when hardy was going to make them reels in korea , how times change and seems everyone now biting at the bit to get one , and no wonder as the price is sweet they'll keep making them in korea if everyone buys them , i'm not saying it's not a great deal and a good reel , to me i just look at the lost jobs in the u.k , still reels being made in the u.k , if people just buy them reels then maybe hardy might see the bigger picture , sad it's always about the $ bucks the guys who built the reels at hardys ''' gone like the wind'' , sorta like what happen to all the mom & pop fly shops , gone , it's no wonder our great countrys are in such a mess , i drive fords and dodges , and fish reels that are not made in korea and darn proud of it , sure i could by a little cheep gas car from the other makers , i'd just sooner spend my money on the companys that started in our great countrys , maybe i'm starting to get old for just a few dollars more one can get as good or better reel IMHO and not made in korea , and for twice the money , i see alot of nice used godfreys reels or others that to me will only go up in value , i wonder if these hardys from korea will go up in value after they been used just my 2 cents and it don't mean anything ,

No one said this is the last reel. When they were pricing Lightweights at $750, we all thought it was absurd and when they were moving manufacturing to Korea, we all thought it was really absurd to pay $750 for a Korean-made Lightweight. Well, they're offering those reels now for $170-$190 - the price is right. There is a market for these reels at that price. Not everybody is going to buy a Lightweight. More people are going to want those reels that look like the wheels that keep spinning when the SUV stops. Posts: 211 01/19/2009 16:29	I can't see what comparing an original Cascapedia to a modern one is supposed to tell us. I understand the nostalgia and most thoughts and feelings expressed in this topic, but the western world has to realise that this is the 21st century and that there's new kids in town: new economies that do exactly the same as we did in the 20th century, with the major difference of a global economy. The world has changed and will continue to change, whether we like it or not. Another thing: Hardy never was a cottage company, not even 130 years ago. Hardy's always been a "big" company and ironically the first fishing reels stamped "Hardy" were made by and purchased from other companies. Innovation, sheer arrogance and producing the best reels in the world for more than a century has made Hardy the stuff of legends, but as I said the world has moved on. Personally I prefer to see the company thrive for at least another century rather than to see them struggle and inevitably vanish from the face of the earth. To disagree with Hardy's new business strategy is to deny the fact that it was (at least partly) based on us, the avarage (?) customer, not buying enough UK made reels...

That said, did you get a pic with the new reel and the hog of a Rainbow yesterday.....I do always enjoy your pics and those from the other guys that have running water in their streams year round.......especially this time of year......it got up to the 20s today...so I shouldn't be complaining I guess...
