Ron,
That doesn't look like the new "K Reel by Hardy". Personally, the "K Reel by Hardy" is fine with me. I think I'll call mine by that name. Thanks! Bob

I had a Teeny line rigged up on the K. I rig everything loop-to-loop, so every reel has just enough backing for a floating line, then I segment on the next
piece of backing to fit a Teeny line - I move lines around like crazy.
We have so many eagles and ospreys winter here, the trout stack up in the deep green holes. I was fishing the gravel bar forming the tailout of a deep hole. The floating line on the Godfrey I used for high-sticking narrow ruts in the dolomite farther down river, and earlier in the morning. It was slow enough there due to heavy fishing the past couple of weeks that I had to stop at my wet-fly-swinging hole on the way out. here's a fish in the slots - a state C&R record came from right here last year

Ron -
The Bow on the Godfrey Westminster brightened my evening...Thanks, but you owe us a pic of the new K reel with a Bow sometime
and Reelmaker....regarding They could have just as well called it the future collectible and inexpensive new "K Reel by Hardy"Amen to that ! It would be easier for me to mentally deal with the change if the reel was called something else.... Mark B

Ron ,again nice pictures in action , i sure like that godfrey reel in the pictures , is it a 306 and if so did you get 100 yards backing on it with the line and my friend on the hardy reel , your 100% correct , it has lots to do with prices and yes i'd never spend $14,000 for a reel , i just don't have that kind of coin . even with me it is about the almighty buck $ to a certain degree , i don't think it's fair to compare the price of the so new korea made hardy to the very old hardy thats worth $14,000 , thats like apples to oranges , what i was trying to get across is for a few more bucks there is some great reels to be had and made in the good ol u.s.a , also just maybe if no one was to buy them cheep priced hardys from korea , maybe hardy might start making them back in the u.k , i'd sooner pay anyday the $450 to you like on that young 15A reel i got from you then buy a reel from hardy that they now have made in korea , just me i guess , and yes that is a super super deal on that hardy reel , and almost to good to be true now would i like to have one , you bet i would , but i'll wait till i find one thats say's england , and i think with everyone buying them that the others will come down in price , and i really am hoping that happens , and if i don't find one , i'll be honest and say i'll most likely regret it , i'd still spend a bit more or even double my money and get something else first , thats why were all so different and each have choices and opinions , |

Rich, it's a 274W, will just squeak a DT5 with a base-wrap of backing - exactly the same capacity as the K 2/3/4.
I'm not the one comparing anything - that's everyone else on this thread. I would rather see this reel and the Lightweights being made in Korea and sold to us at realistic prices than to see Hardy disappear because they were not able to sell the English-made reels at $1000 and $750, respectively. We were the ones not buying them in droves. But I'll also add, that these prices are back to where Hardys were at in the 80s - competitive with the mainstream fly fishing tackle, and making them a viable choice.

note also, you can get a 3" Bougle Mk VI home for $280 - that is a good deal, too.
Why should a Perfect be priced at $750? (rhetorical question) If you look at the CPI in current dollars on the historic prices of Perfects, they have always been a $200 reel.

Ron, since you compare old & new values a lot using CPI, you might want to spend some time on this site:
http://www.measuringworth.com/calculators/uscompare/ Measuring Worth has been created by a couple of Chicago economists, and gives a far wider comparison of costs than using CPI alone. Worth browsing the site. As I already knew, CPI is relatively artificial and limited--although it clearly gives a quick & simplistic comparison. Pat |

Ron,
I don't feel stating " everyone else on this thread are the ones comparing " is a true or thoughtful statement. I'll also agree with turtledoc that you still owe us the picture of the 26" bow and the K reel. bob

sorry (paraphrasing Pee Wee Herman), but a lot of people have been saying a lot of things on this thread, such as, paraphrasing, we were all bemoaning over
Hardy moving production to Korea.
The person who said that was not speaking for me. That move was inevitable for Hardy to keep enough cash flow to keep the doors open. All I've been saying is this is an amazing reel for the price, and the outcome is much better than expected. I would have never considered purchasing this reel at it's previous price. Nor did I consider buying a similarly priced Chinese reel. I did not capture the 26" rainbow, but I know where it lives. If it helps, here is a sibling from the same hole.
Pat, I've had that site bookmarked since 2005.

Someone help me to understand this ...
It's the difference between Seoul and soul. The sun set a long time ago on the British Empire, thank goodness. And no reasonable person doubts the technological dexterity of Korean manufactuerers. There are, however, some intangibles which just are not transnational. Je ne sais quoi is not an engineering term. But it is a reason to prefer a UK made reel. |
