When I started out I had some good advice on glass. Had a couple of nice Shakespeare translucent almost transparent brown rods, thin walled, and rapidly moved to Fenwick's chocolate brown rods. Bought a light grey Lamiglass graphite and have stuck with carbon fiber when not using cane since then. Have had other graphite's including an Orvis 8 Foot Trout and an 8'9" Western Series. Loved my Orvis cane "Alas" listed in the Your Rod Collection thread (Collecting Bamboo Fly Rods) and just recently reinstalled an Orvis nameplate to my graphite quiver.
I've noticed T&T and some of the other high end limited manufacturers are getting back to fiberglass after leaving it to private builders - for the most part - for a good number of years. Would enjoy hearing input on glass and other synthetic rods.
My current graphite's are lited as follows:
Thomas & Thomas LPS 6'6", 3wt [may be parting with this one]
Orvis Superfine One Ounce 6'6", 2wt
Payne 6', 3wt (DT3/WF4)
Redington 5 pc Wayfarer 7', 3wt but prefer casting with a 4wt 444 Sylk
Bacon Rod Co. multi-pc 8'6" & 9'6", 3 - 8wt
Bacon Rod Co. 9' Boron/Graphite, 4wt (casts 3 - 5wt)
Leonard 866G multi-modulus 8'6", 6/7wt
Leonard Golden Shadow 7'6", 5wt. ('78-'81?) perhaps Aroner years - extra fine taper grip
Scott A2 9', 5wt
Sage III RPLX 9', 7wt
Bacon Rod Co. 9'6", 8wt
Powell TiBoron XL 9', 9wt
Warmest regards,
Cy
