Steve, is Canyon Creek the same campground where we met/you stayed last year?
I'm hoping to stop by Friday evening after fishing and say hi for a while. Sounds like I might have to do a little campground hopping.

Looking to pitch a tent, share a camp spot... | #64
|
My wife and I can't get away until Friday afternoon, and most of the campgrounds are first-come-first-serve, so we're wondering if there is someone headed over earlier that doesn't mind sharing a camp spot???
Bob (Freestoner) will be in the same boat, as he's driving up from Sacramento, due to get there on Friday. We don't mind splitting, or paying the entire camp fee. We just can't get over soon enough to find a spot in the same county as the fair. Last year we ended up at Candle Creek, which was beautiful, but a long ways away. We don't take up much room (a 10' x 10' tent), and we bring our own food and beer... Drop me a PM if you think there's a chance you or somebody else will have room for a tent-dwelling bamboo addict or two. . . . Rex TheMontyMan |

I'd like that, too...
I just have my subcompact and a 3-person tent to take up space. If all goes as planned, I will be up there by Friday afternoon- but in view of the fact that spaces will be filling up fast, I'd be overjoyed if someone were to save a space for Rex (who asked first) and myself. Bob

8th Metolius Cane Fair -- a Success! | #67
|
Lots of people at the tent; Roger said it was the best fair yet. Casting, casting, casting. Harry & crew had set up the casting
pool again. Great demo by John Judy on spey casting. He does the same thing every year, and it is always fresh.
We had great new rod exhibitors this year, folks like Joe Bradley from California. Jerry Foster, our Guru, was back with his full set of demo rods. With them you can test a wide range of actions. Joe at Bellinger gave us a wonderful surprise. He bought a "new" medium format film camera reasonable and had absolutely great photographs of people and things cane rod on display {small and clear and, did I tell you, great!}. Bug him for copies. I traded a flat of blueberries for one / mine {delivery when ripe in August}. Sorry folks, but I didn't take one photograph! Bad on me. Honestly, I don't know what was wrong with me this year about that. Normally I take one of the empty tent {big circus style}, but this year, by 6 PM it was down! {I did an interview for the new book right after the fair ended. While we were talking, down she came.} We had SnooKen, Rex, and some other great campmates at Canyon Creek. There's always room for more. Someone does have to get there on Thursday to get the sites though. Too many people. Steve Kiley went down early this year. On Sunday night, our fire was ringed with people for a long time. No one wanted the feel to go away. The night was dark and the Milky Way was bright. One person mentioned they hadn't seen the stars like that in decades. Earlier, Steve took a group up to Green Ridge to watch sunset over the mountains. The pot-luck was super! And fun. Lots of people, lots of talk, and lots and lots of great food. Back at camp I soon had the fire going. Happily, someone brought along a bottle of Cuban Rum {smuggled?}. Smooth in the dark of night, like a thundering herd of elephants in the morning {account by others, I just had a sip, or
two}.
Lots of collectables, books, and fly tying. And, talk, talk, talk.
Hope someone else will tell tales about the fair. Joe |

I rolled in on Wednesday afternoon and checked in to my cabin. I had stopped previously at Allen Thramer's house to pick up a new glass rod for the show. I
then went campground hopping and found Dave (Bamboo Adict) and Snooken and visited a bit.
I spent most of my time with Gary (basingp) and Sadie (big yellow lab) at their cabin, fly fishing, throwing tennis balls in the river for Sadie and casting rods. We invited folks over for smoked pork butt but no one showed up. Too bad, yous all loss Thursday morning we sat on the bed of my truck as the Metolius bubbled by waiting for the mail girl to bring in my new Erik Peterson (Linnea Rods) quad. Fun stuff. Saturday morning the show started off well with big crowds but by two o'clock petered out. So I'm not sure where you get the best ever crowds thought Joe. Many many rodmakers MIA. I started to get heat exhaustion and packed up and left at four to go find a cool place and drink lots of water. Personally I missed A.J., Chris McDowell, and Greg Hall. Maybe next year. Dan |

It was nice to see Steve again and cast a few of his hollow builts. Boy Steve, that campground of yours did not provide much protection from the sun. I think
it was about 96 degrees when I was there.
Have to recount a cool little story from Saturday. My table was next to Dan Brock who was graciously doing appraisals as always. He was busy with someone and this little old gentleman walked up and asked me if I could take a look at his rod for him since Dan was busy. He had a old Leonard tube and out of it he pulled an old bag with a withered Leonard hang tag. He went on to tell me that this rod belonged to his father who had purchased it from a Leonard store in New York in 1938. As I pulled it out I recognized immediately it was a tournament rod as it had the light olive wraps with red/ purple tips on the signature wrap. It also had the cap and ring with the usual Leonard die stamp and the Tournament die stamp as well. This particular rod was a 8' 6" 3/2 for a 5 weight. The ferrule fit was silky smooth and was just wonderful to put together and wiggle. He said to me "If you think it's worth over one thousand dollars then i do not want to fish it". Well, it had one tip about an inch short, and the wraps were drying out but overall was in nice shape so Dan looked it over and and had a nice chat with him and gave him an estimated appraisal which he was very happy with. One interesting fact to note on this rod, it had the patent numbers die stamped into the ferrules which Dan said Leonard stopped doing in 1929 so he guessed that this was an overstock rod that Leonard had not sold until this gentlemen's father walked into a Leonard store and bought new in 1938. Pretty cool. Dan

Mats, thank you. Outstanding.
Of course you and Ander are always welcome at our house, off-the-plane or otherwise. It was great fun to have you as guests. Sharon still talks about cowboy Ander going after his T-bone! It was a great fair. Our Sunday night campfire was one of the best yet, and I didn't think we could do better than in many past years. Joe Ps: Dan, thank you for the captions. PsPs: does anyone have a photo to share of our one-and-only Jerry Foster? PsPsPs: the fellow in the volunteer F&G uniform in the first Roberts photo is Chris Foster. {not related to Jerry, as noted, he's a singularity in our universe}. For decades, Chris has taught kids how to fish. He's helped the fair every year.

Joe (wctc1) great meeting you, along with everyone else at the campsite- Steven Kiley, Rex (Monty Man)& Jennifer, Ken (Snooken)- and, well, everyone else
at the Fair. It was a fantastic time for me. My only regret is that I didn't get around to casting any rods other than Rex's 7.5' Montague Fishkill
Light Trout model, which was a real treat just to examine, as well as being a true 3/4 weight vintage Montague. I got around to the tying booths and got a
couple of free flies, as well as checking in with the conservation booths and listening to some great presentations on that remarkable wonder of nature, the
Metolius River.
Also thanks to Roger White of the Camp Sherman store, who as literally the only game in town could be squeezing every last dollar out of his captive customer base, but who somehow just can't get to do it...and thanks as well, for sponsoring the Rod Fair. As I mentioned above, I managed to stay over there for another week! The Metolius is a truly unique stream- actually a full-fledged river, after only a couple of miles- and I got to check out about 8-10 miles of it before I bid it goodbye. I had heard it was a spring creek, and thought I was going to be dealing with a little jump-across stream. Not exactly! The river was between hatches, so to speak, but I managed to bring up some fish every day, although I didn't get a nice one within landing distance until after about 7 days of fishing- the one in the second picture in my post above. I managed to get my rod close enough at the handle end to get a rough measure of the length of the fish- between 14" and 15"- but the first time I went for a photo, while trying to get the camera strap out of the picture (RH strap! useless!) I dropped my W30 into the Metolius, and barely managed to grab it back as it sank elbow-deep (into the eddy of a pool that was for all practical purposes bottomless) while the fish thrashed madly...and on my second attempt at a full-length closeup next to the rod, I let the line slack for a split second, and the still fully energetic fish shook free of the hook. Better that way, actually...no need to handle the fish in order to unhook and release it. But it would have been nice to get a better picture to illustrate just how sleek and healthy it was. Not a football, but chunky. 1 1/2- 13/4 lbs., I'd say. Speaking of footballs, I had a fish at least 1 lb. larger grab my Golden Stone nymph a couple of days previous to that. The fly was drifting just under the surface, I had a clear view of both it and the take of the fish. He spit it quickly- I gather that's something the fish are good at, in this river- but for a split second, I got a look at the broadside fla~sh of what would have been the biggest rainbow trout I'd have ever tied into. I reeled in to look at the fly and realized that I had forgotten to de-barb the hook- karma!- as well as failing to hone it, unlike my usual practice. That was probably the same fish that had taken a fat swat at my soft hackle the previous evening, in the same lie. On- and off, as quick as flipping a light switch... I had a few other nice takes on the Golden Stone dry fly- 4 in one day, on Wednesday- but couldn't close the deal with any of them. The Metolius fish- particularly the bigger ones- are willing, but wary. But just the takes were great. One came on my first cast with the fly, a rainbow maybe 12" long rolling up from the bottom out of the white water. The unexpectedness of this game can just leave me shaking my head. Have to learn to "never say never", even when tying on a fly damn near the size of a clothes pin, and chucking it into a diamond-clear stream with no risers in sight.

What a lifetime adventure this trip was for me. Here's a partial list of the friends I got to meet in person for the first time(and those of you I'm
forgetting to include....Blame the Rum): Tim and Josie Aaron, Steve Kiley, Dave and Linda Roberts, Jerry Foster, Joe Beelart, Mats and Anders Oberg, Tim &
Mike, Chris Carlin and his Mom, Mike and Valerie Brooks, Adam and Melissa Trahan & Sons, Mike Shay......... I continue to be overwhelmed by the
memories of all of your kindnesses and hospitality! The incredible beauty of Arizona, Nevada, California and Oregon is only outdone by the quality of its
residents. My thanks to all of you.
Anyway, here are a few more photos. First, for Joe....Jerry Foster and Jerry Kustich with MontyMan Rex looking on from his table next to Sweetgrass.
