FFP, big difference between March and April. Usually March is tough with not a lot of open water. In my opinion, Estes area would be the best bet either
month. If we have a mild March then the Big Thompson will have some open water especially close to Estes. April is much better with lots of the Big T open.
Around Aspen you have the Fryingpan and Roaring Fork and I would call the fly shops in Glenwood Springs or Basalt and get a current update on conditions.
Conditions can change daily. Hope this helps, Gary.

If you are in Denver, why not finish the South Platte at Cheesman Canyon and Deckers? Typically fishes well that time of the year. If you are willing to Drive
to Basalt/Aspen, you will have excellent fishing on the Pan and the Roaring Fork. The canyon on the Big T is pretty shady, so it can be cold in there. I would
shoot for the Platte or Aspen.

Thanks for the replies and I think I will try the Aspen area this year. I fished in the Estes Park area by the
dam last year.

I am with Jayhake. The South Platte is a blast for site fishing to big bows and browns. 11 mile canyon and cheeseman canyon are both great. The high country is great too, like Estes and Rocky Mountain National Park, but it really depends on the weather, can easily change in a single day that time of year. I will be fishing the South Platte in the last week of April, if that is when you are there, i can show you around a bit. I think maybe one of the reel making guys, sbrusky?, lives there too, maybe he will chime in. |

Another excellent venue that time of year is the often maligned Arkansas River. There may be some outstanding caddis fly action that time of year in the Canon
City area upstream to Texas Creek. If you have not experienced the "hatch" along the Arkansas, it can be exhilarating. Just don't tell anyone,
the river is crowded enough already.
