Allcock Marvel value help |

I was thinking of listing this reel and would appreciate help as to approximate value. It is a 3 1/2" frame size, and seems like it has seen little use.
Most all bluing present. Trademark stag clearly shown. Tight, with strong, adjustable click. Interesting sliding cap/button spool release. Full length foot
looks to have been thinned a little at the ends. Crazed handle (a bit tight) with greenish tint. Thanks for any help.

I'll start. I have two "Marvels" although both in the 3" size and they're really great little reels to fish, as well as look at. One
of mine has the button latch like yours. I think that adds a degree of uniqueness to your reel. Your reel also has a great finish, offset a little bit by the
foot issue as well as the larger but still very useful 3-1/2" size. I'd say it's worth somewhere between $160.00 and $185.00 for starters, but am
anxious to see what others have to say (i'm selfishly hoping I'm way low!). Greg

I bought a 3 inch around xmas time and paid around 100 pounds . Pictures of it and searun,s and a couple other forum members marvels posted towards end of
January. They seem to be very well made and well liked reels. I might be too low as well. The agate youngs seem to be going for 300.oo and up of late and this
reel is every bit their equal, pretty much same but with different latch and nickle silver guide. I started out to agree with searuns pricing but thinking about
it think I,ll say 225-250. your reel looks to have nice finish. leaded. I,ll put in a disclaimer though as I,m no expert, just spend way to much time watching.

These reels have been bidding higher and higher lately. I would say Daryl is on the right track.
One thing to remember about these reels. They aren't making any more, and as long as demand is increasing, the prices will go up.
the rods are never obsolete - the marketing is.

...okay, I agree with Darryl and Ron - I was way too low
. Keep it
going guys, I'm doing way better on my Marvels here than the pitiful stocks that I own, and this is a LOT more fun! Come to think about it, I think the
Marvels we own are heads above those Dingleys that everyones been fawning over and someone should write a book about them! Cheers

Searun,
There is a book on the Marvel and other fine products of J. W. Young. It is being published as we type! I myself try not to favor my Youngs over my Dingleys or vice versa. Things are happier in the reel case that way!

I look forward to it too. But in the meantime we need to procure additional valuations from members for jhecht who started this thread seeking info.' on his very fine reel. Anyone?

Searun,
I've got a 3.5" Marvel that looks alot like yours, and almost as fine looking on my Granger as yours looks on your handsome rod. My Marvel is a later one with the latch release, but as Bob Dylan once said: "but I love her just the same..." I'm voting for $200. + I've also got a lovely 2.75" "Ousel" with the stag trademark. I love reels with their names on them!

I love all of my Marvel reels and I purchased this 3" here on the board a year ago for $225,00 and it was a DEAL IMHO

Nice reel FFPapa and I think we may still be valuing these reels to low,on looking at some recent young prices. I don,t know how much extra an agate is worth
over a silver guide. I guess thats all in the eye of buyer. I know the Marvel I,ve handled is ever bit as smooth running as any of my other youngs and better
than the newer painted ones.As with anything hand made they aren,t all equal. I,ll say 300-325 today. Daryl
Searun your right reels are doing way better than market,But even if you can fish one for a few years and get your money back you get a quality product that works well at no cost. Almost every thing you buy is worth less from second you pay for it. Priming myself for another reel,Probably.

Daryl, you're absolutely right. I buy the reels because I enjoy fishing with them, and they have a certain "soul" that new gear won't have for many years, if at all. I just wish I could get out there more often and use them (we need a season extender - I'm at 48 degrees north lat'.) BTW; I still like the direction on value this thread has taken! Greg |
