The 98 has a faster taper and is usually considered a five weight rod. Sometimes you will see a 98 listed as a four weight but the Payne catalogs I've
seen list it as a five.

About a quarter of an ounce, which is significant in that light a rod. I agree the 98 is a 4/5 or a 5, depending upon the line. I liked a TT4/5 or a Sylk DT5
on the one I owned. A while back I had a 97 pass through my hands, and it liked the TT4 or the 444 4wt.
