A tale of four winters in Yellowstone Country-Summer Road Closures |
Lead | ||
|
What a weird winter it started in Nov-mid December with hardly any snow maybe 30". Beginning just before Christmas to mid-Jan the snow came in abundance
with over 100" and the snowpack was a little over 100%. The snow stopped after mid-Jan thru late-Feb with some nice 30-40 degreee days and snowpack went
down to 80%. Since late Feb to current the snows returned with a vengenance with over 60". Last night the snow stopped and when I awoke this morning
another 10" has fallen with moderate snow still falling. The snowpack is now over 100% with another 12" -18" due thru Wed. Stream flows should
be great inYellowstone Country for the 2009 summer season. See Summer road closures posts below affecting travel to the NE Part
of the Park.

Dennis;
Thanks for the update. I'll be looking forward to seeing you in September! Pat "He told us about Christ's disciples being fisherman, and we were left to assume...that all great fishermen on the Sea of Galilee were fly
fisherman and that John, the favorite, was a dry-fly fisherman."

Pat & Eric
Look forward to seeing you and a couple other forum members this coming summer. I hate say it but I need to get out here for awhile so I've scheduled a trip the first week of April to the Missouri. I feel like mushroom with snow above all my windows with the exception of two. Dennis |

Dennis,
You read my mind. I was about to ask how the snow pack was shaping up. Thanks for the good news. Jim

Thanks for the report, Dennis. I'm also looking forward to fishing with you and a few other forum members in June.
As you know, I'm also back in August - September...it's good to know there will be some water to fish at that time! |

Hi Larry,
The dates you'll be here should be good fishing on the Firehole but soon after you leave the Firehole will go downhill due to water temps. Your best fishing will be the Upper Madison with salmonflies mayflies and caddis coming off. Nymphing is always an excellent bet using #12 Prince beadhead and a dropper #16 Shopfac(Blue Ribbon Flies developed them) is a killer you can also substitute a #4 salmonfly nymph for the Prince. My buddies and I have taken more big fish on the Madison with Shopfac than any other fly. The Madison below Hebgen and between Quake can also be very good. Expect alot of people at this time of year and the following for the salmonfly hatch turns Lyons Bridge boat access on the Madison into something out of Woodstock. I've had to wait as long as an hour to launch my boat with 50+ boats sitting in the parking lot. In regards to Conclave contact Mike Clark or Kathy since I heard from Hortoncreek they may be having it in Aug. in Lyons. Enjoy!!! Dennis Forgot to mention the Gallatin doesn't get going until mid-July and same for Soda Butte, Lamar and Slough. You might give the Gibbon a shot.

Have you heard about this Dennis? Late season access to the northeast corner will be a problem.

Here's a pic of my real estate office shot today. This what winter is about in Yellowstone Country. Today it's a warm 36 degrees after a overnight low
of 20 below. I was over in West Yellowstone today where they were conducting " The World Snowmobile Expo " with snowcross races, snowmobile drag
races and snowmobile manufacture introducing their 2010 snowmobiles. West is a busy place for the bubbleheads this weekend.

Picked up another 14" of snow this weekend and for next three days they're forecasting another 10-14" . Snowpack is looking great between
100-110% but I'm getting tired of it and heading to the Missouri around Helena Friday for a few days of fishing. it's chuck and duck time for pre-spawn
bows from 18-26" in our favorite spot.

I don't think so I was in Spokane when Mt. Helens blew and deposited an inch of that crap. I hope Mt. Redoubt blows soon since I have a 9 day float trip on
Moraine Creek and the Alagnak River at the end of Aug. I don't want see that stuff again.

When will it End? | #18 | ||
|
Recently, we've had a nice meltdown from 52" to about 40" but the weather gods have done an about face with 10" of new snow last night. The
forecast thru tomorrow is for a additional 8-12". The way it looks now I may not see bare ground until Memorial Day. On bright side no water worries just
maybe an extended runnoff into late June or early July for the Madison.

Dennis,
With the road closures - what is the best way to get to the Lamar Valley coming from Utah? Bozeman to Livingston. Livingston to Gardiner and then into the Park? Thanks, Bob |

Bob,
I still think going in at West then down along Yellowstone Lake and up along the Yellowstone River to the Lamar Valley. Dennis |
