REC sells agatine guides that I believe are from H&H in the UK. They are basically old-style boat-rod guides, which pretty much all stripping guides
were/are. Nicely made, very clean looking, but a little big/clunky for given orifice diameter IMO.
I believe H&H stripping guides are the same used by Tom Moran on the rods he makes for Blue Blood in Japan (I'm not sure if he is still making rods for Blue Blood). The Bellinger/Whitehead agate strippers sold through Snake are the best in my opinion. The earlier ones were a little inconsistent in terms of orifice size per stripper size, and some had orifices too small for the stripper size, but in recent years they appear to have precise and consistent orifice diameters. Based on a conversation I had with Mike McCoy several weeks ago I think he's making his own agate stripping guides. Now whether he's finishing his own
agates I'm not entirely sure.

Hi Greg,
I've been buying snakes and stripping guides from Mike pretty much since he started making snakes, and there were plenty of times he was waiting for them to deliver agate strippers to fill my order. In the 1998-2002 time-frame Bellinger was the root source of virtually every agate stripping guide sold by suppliers in the US with the exception of agate/agatine strippers from H&H and miscellaneous antique stock. I believe Joe Arguello sold some he made on special request (really nice if you can get hold of some) but he mainly used them for himself. To your point it normally wouldn't come up in conversation (doesn't matter, and Mike has created a great resource for rodmakers) and he may now be making his own stripping guides. Chuck |

i can state definitively that Whitehead/Bellinger is not supplying the strip guides. Mike is making them himself. The wait likely refers to waiting to get them
done. As many know Mike has designed a new innovative(patented i believe) snake guide for the 'round rod' trade. This project almost certainly took up
lots of his time in design the manufacturing process, let alone the hassle of patenting anything. Those who have done so know it is a major PITA. The good news
is that the guide availability should return.
It is true that both Mike and Goldenwitch, the two main suppliers of agate/agatine guides, were both birthed from D Whiteheads instruction |
